Hey guys new member here. i have a quick question! what kind of independent rear suspension and positrack rear end can i put in my truck it is an inline 6 1979 Ford F-100, so that i can get some good street performance. and is there much difference between a 300-6 and a 302!! need lots of help?
I can't say that I've seen an independant REAR suspension system on a truck before. Maybe on some of the Baha race trucks, but I can't be sure. In fact, it's common for people that have IFS to convert them to solid axles.
To answer you questions:
Q1: If you are hell bent on IRS, look at retrofitting a Corvette rear assembly.
Q2: About 2 cylinders.... just kidding... IMHO, I'd much rather have a 300-6 than a 302 in a truck, provided those were the only two choices I had.
Thanks for the help guys! I really just want both tires to burn rubber instead of one. I"m not planning on hauling anything or towing anything with my truck. Any help? i want it to hall ***! i guess it would be better to keep the original engine in it which is a Inline 300-6. I want to be able to beat guys and then tell them it was with a small motor. i want to have a secret weapon.
I can see the look at trucks from two totally different perspectives. Based on your newly defined needs.... scrap the IRS, get a limited slip ford diff, go back to the 302 (a late model 4 valve would be the ticket), put a blower and a nitrous set up on it. Get disgusted because the rear tires break loose if you even look at them. Rebuild it every few years or less depending on your shoe size. You did mention you were independently wealthy, didn't you? Seriously, I build my truck engines for working and (hopefully) longevity, they also happen to go somewhat quicker, so everthing I have told you is worth exactly what you are paying for it. Good Luck.
Thanks alot Ecuri you have been a great help! You don't mind if i look you up in case i have more questions? you were straight and to the point thanks. what models or years should i look at to get that limited slip?
do you know of any sights where i can go to look at say pictures of decked out motors or especially 302's i want to see how nice my engine will come out once i build it! thanks
Cultivate a good relationship with a bone yard man. The right guy behind the counter is an indespensible source of knowlege. I am assuming that any F-150 series 9" will work, take a tape measure with you. I have never had a great need to upgrade mine. Obviously, the later the year the better the chance for low miles, inspect the gears in any event before taking delivery. I think, but don't know for sure, that the U Joint size will change, so see if the drive shaft is available with it.
There are lots of users here who hot rod the 302, go to that specific forum and ask for advice.
I am sure they can also steer you towards a reasonable ratio based on your application. Once again, good luck.
Get the rear end from a truck, they have 31 spline axles, slightly better than the car versions (28 splines). With a limited slip or Trak-Lok you will have to change the lubricant more often. try to find one that is geared 3.73 or 4.10. Good Luck.
