2000 E150 cargo Van
I need advise on the best way to replace the side door cable that attaches to the outside handle on the side door. It has broken. I replaced the handle several years ago. I can get to the outside door handle fine and I know how the cable attaches to it, BUT do I need to pull out the locking mech to thread the other end of the cable?
I was hoping someone has replaced this door cable. I have the 2000 repair books and they do not address this. YouTube has videos but I could not find one that addressed my question. Part comes in tomorrow and I will work out of the van Saturday. Hope some one can advise. Thanks again.
Thanks for the reply VannerDude.
I actually did a site search and found nothing. I suspect there are some threads but my search pulled up just about every thread from today going back.
Yes, I am familiar with the repair sleeves. I found out about the watching youtube videos but I had already ordered the cable from the dealership.
I am trying to find out if the door latch assembly (held by 3 torx screws) has to be removed to attach the cable. I assume but does but just looking for confirmation before I get in too deep.
Thanks Again.
Jim:
Thank you for the link. While it didn't address the issue of latch removal, another thread was shown at the bottom of the page that did.
I found out what I suspected. The 3 star screws need to be removed to get the latch in question out.
I have replaced two handles on this 17 year old van. This is the first cable. Guess I have been lucky. Some were reporting replacement after only 10 years.
I'm in agreement with the thoughts of some of the other posters. While there may be do it yourself fixes to repair the cables, I'm not as talented as some others. I opted to just buy the dealer cable that is priced higher than it should be.
Thanks again.
Now to do the fix and get back to work.
I have completed the job BUT it was not without its problems brought on by me being Stupid. Did anyone hear me cussing from down here in Texas?
In a effort to help other that's might search this thread out. I am going to tell you what NOT to do. Do not assume you have everything hooked up correctly before closing the door. What to do: Close the latch several times manually and make sure the latch will open the closed door. This is the step I missed (lol). Everything appeared to be working but things were in a bind. In putting everything back together I didn't know the inside handle cable had come out.
By now you are probably laughing and I don't blame you. With the door closed the outside latch would not work and the inside latch wouldn't either.
I have no problem pointing out my stupidity if it helps others. Don't ask me how I got it working but I did.
Hey my inside handle on the slide door doesnt work. How does the inside panel come off. I havent really had time to get at it much but was just wondering what comes off first.
Sorry, can't help there. Mine is a cargo van with no trim panels inside. I believe I saw a video on youtube showing the panel removal. Maybe someone else with chime in.
