So I've been thinking about doing some upgrades to my truck, everything is original but the engine, and tranny. I did install HID fog and HID headlights. I'm curious as to what type of upgrades I should do to get more HP out of the engine.. I know cold air intake would be the best starter, but everyone I've seen is very expensive. Just trying to get a little more go from the red light.
I do need a spark plug change I know i'm miss firing I guess motorcraft has new platinum plugs is there any other plugs out there for better engine performance?
First things first, make sure it's running right. You mention plugs, that should be your first step, make sure all coils are good. The stock plugs will be fine for. truck. Skip CAI, as mentioned, it won't do anything. Want a little more throttle response? Search for Gotts Mod. Some swear by it, others eh. Your best bet for a few more HP will be a tuner.
Bling is not going to prevent it from being a yard ornament . Hitting this engine hard is going to tell in timing repairs . Service it well and keep it cool . No extended oil changes and change plugs/boots before 60k . Use mc filters and syn oil .
Change transmission pan to drain type and change fluid mercon V before 30k . a little at a time . Make sure you have a transmission cooler .
Timing job runs $1400 in parts . transmission rebuild at least $2500 .
This engine is high maint, get it right before too much bling .
A neat mod is electric fans but you must do them right or run into overheating ,you can pickup horse power . I haven't done mine because I live in a hot climate and ac running all the time . I tow and I need reliability , its an expensive fix but it gives you access to the whole front of the engine .
Newer trucks come with it .
I do like my LED lights , don't use cheap ones .
Leave everything else alone and go for a higher stall converter.
Then you will have more off the line power, guaranteed .
A higher stall converter will allow the motor to get into its higher part of torque curve and applies it to the trans and rear gear for more torque to the road.
You will feel this more over any other changes you make and even smile about it.
Good luck.
