New Fender

Well, today my daughter dented her fender pretty badly pulling out of Sonic. Yes, its a big *** dent. My question is does anyone make a new fender that's spot on when installed or should I just have them repair the fender. Either way the paint and labor will be a factor since this time I am making her pay for it. Just think. A 93 4x4 regular cab step side with 100k miles on it and it had never been wrecked and this girl has wrecked it 2 times in less than 5 months and burned up the AC compressor after I told her repeatedly to get it flushed before it burned out. Anyway, fender recommendations please.

I can't help you with your decision. Those that could may need to see a picture. If it were me, I'd take it to a body shop in your area and ask them what they recommend. Sorry to hear about your daughter's "bad luck". We've been in your shoes with our two kids. Best of luck to you.

Are you in spring, as in just outside of Houston? Best bet would to be swing by a pick a part yard and get a used fender. Do it all the time in the area. If you need help let me know. A/M fenders are okay but not quite what an OEM one is.

I have two aftermarket fenders on my truck and they are perfectly fine. The body lines line up too.

I have never understood why people would sink big money in replacing it with an OEM fender when the value of these trucks is not much more than the cost to buy an OEM fender and have a shop paint it. But, its your money, or your daughters money, so do as you will with it.

I have however bought, painted and installed two aftermarket fenders on my truck and they look just fine.

Although......If you live somewhere that rust isnt a problem, then junkyards usually have used ones at a reasonable price. And obviously if you can get OEM for the same price as a new aftermarket then doit. I.e, going to pick a part and getting one for $100, then its worth it. I live in Michigan though and there isn't an OBS Ford left without a fender rust hole, so I am stuck paying the ridiculous $400+ to have an OEM shipped to me off ebay from Arizona or something.

Thanks guys. Yes I am looking at body shops but I was hoping to find one in the same color if I go to the salvage yards. Does not appear to be much problem finding them. I was thinking aftermarket but after seeing how many of them were in the salvage yards I think that is my best bet. The corner of the Sonic sign actually drug a large hole thru the fender and I have talked to several bodyshops in the area and none of them weld so I am not going to have a bunch of bondo on the truck, it has never been wrecked before so I am not starting with plastic crap on the truck now.

Hate to shake your world up, but the truck had filler on it from the factory.

I have not seen that yet in any of the cars I have restored and I am on about the 30th car or truck I have done.

Well unless you sanded down the entire car to bare metal, you might not find any. But that doesn't mean it isn't there, the steel body panels are never perfect, even from the factory. So it's more then likely that every one of your 30 cars/trucks had at least a little filler on it somewhere, it's simply unavoidable.

And a body shop that doesn't know how to weld..at all? Is not a body shop I would ever want go to. Plus if the fender has a hole punched in it like you say, then it's probably not worth fixing anyway.

As far as aftermarket fenders go. They are really not bad at all, I have 2 on my truck and you can't even tell they are not OEM.

And to the guy that said these trucks are not worth The price to fix a fender obviously doesn't live in the rust belt. Up here whenever I see a clean OBS for sale they are only on the lot for a few days before they are sold. The f150s usually sell for around 6k. And a decent f350 diesel will go over 10k every time.

Oh yeah and of course. They all have some filler just not repair filler. Most often a finishing glaze. I use it all the time before I paint the cars. I do not have the patience for body work so I replace and fit the new parts. If there is too much rust or holes I just do not buy the car.

If you haven't found one yet, I go to the Hiram Clark LKQ yard on occasion and I don't mind checking it out. I would need to know which side, front or rear, 150 250 ? Not sure if that matters. Do you? color code.

You are in the end of rust free trucks, just get a used one.

As for aftermarket, They do NOT fit correctly for anyone who knows what they are looking at(ME), the average Joe would never be able to tell
