Have been getting ready to tow the boat again, and I hooked the truck up to the trailer to check the lights. The truck said all was well, but my helper said the tail/running lights didn't come on. Checked the truck again and it certainly said the tail/running lights checked good.
I put my bench power supply on the trailer, and the wiring and lights which were new and installed by me a year or so ago worked perfectly. But the truck wouldn't bring them on. I finally found that Fuse 34 was blown - it is the tall one marked 25 in the picture below. So I went to the glove box to get a spare fuse. Nada. Then I looked under the hood. Nada. Finally I went to the parts store and the first one, O'Reilly's, had everything but a 25 amp. So I bought a 20 amp and it worked.
But I went on to another store and they had a short 25, shown next to the blown one. It fits and works, so if you can't find a long one go for a short one. And, if you are towing you might want to see if you have spares - apparently Ford no longer supplies them.
And, by the way, they are expensive. See the receipt.
ran into the same thing a while back. Where I store my trailers is less than ideal. I believe one of the axle's on the 16 ft levered up, and in their infinite wisdom, Leonard ran the wiring through a tube below the deck, low enough for the axle to hit. So the wires grounded out.
After hitting all the parts stores, I ended up at the ford dealership, and they had to order them. I've never spent so much for a fuse, and I too got a back up.
I can't find anything anywhere that could possibly have blown the fuse. All the wiring is well protected and nothing has been cut. And the LED lights pull just less than .5 amp, so I'm happy running a 20 amp fuse instead of the stock 25, and would even run a smaller one if I could find it. But 20 was the smallest I could find.
But, why did Ford go to these new fuses? They take up more room than the blade-style, are much less available, and cost many times more. So, why?
I don't know why they would change it. It's the one fuse, I think, that would pop often as trailers are not maintained and taken care of like vehicles are.
Years ago I stopped in at a carquest, that was clearing out their floor inventory, it was towards the end of the day so the deals were great. they had several totes set up for 5 bucks, which included the tote as well. So i bought them (yes all 5 of them, i mean a tote for 5 bucks). One was full of fuses, wire, wire loom, and other electrical things. Tons of these fuses, but again, none in the 25 amp realm. Still I scavanged all the 20's and 15's out of the box and have them ready for the F150 in case I blow one on the road. Wish I'd checked the box before ordering. I always forget what I have squirreled away in the shop.
