Question Buyers advice

Hi everyone.

I am looking to replace my daily driver. I currently own a 2002 grand cherokee 4.7 V8 and its been nothing but a money pit, problem after problem.

I have previously owned a 2nd gen explorer V6 (great truck, crap engine) and a 3rd gen explorer (crap truck, great engine)

I live in New Zealand with a climate very similar to Seattle and western WA. I daily drive roughly 50kms/31miles a day.

It has always been a dream to owned an excursion. One has finally come up for sale that I am considering.

Its a 2003 eddie bauer with the 6.0 and 171,000 miles. My question is, would this be a good buy ? What do I need to consider? I assume making sure its studded and deleted is priority. I have never owned a diesel but I do have a large interest in them. I do always keep to servicing schedules too. Everything is changed when it is meant to be changed.

If you consider a gas powered jeep a money pit a 6.0 diesel is going to be an abyss

That's strange. I have an 04 Overland in totally beautiful condition. The only reason for me getting an Ex is because I need more dog to not let the tail of our travel trailer wag the dog. Once the Ex has been gone over once in the shop, I'll be selling the Jeep I'm sure.

Good luck with your Dieswell. Yes bullet proof it properly (heads off) and delete it or course. At least once done you'll have fantastic towing ability (assuming you'll be getting a good tuner also).

I wouldn't consider a 6.0 to be any less of a money pit than what you already have.. and as stated above will likely be even more of a money pit.. especially an 03

So even a bullet proofed 6.0 is going to give me a lot of troubles? I had heard once you bullet proofed them they would last you forever.

I do like my Jeep but its had over 20k spent on it over 2 years including having the engine completely rebuilt because a valve spring dropped.

You need to make sure what condition the Excursion, engine, transmission are in.
Sticky threads in Excursion and 6L forum on what to look for when buying.
Many original owners back in the day, felt tuners were great. Cheap tuners, destroy the trans, some can overfuel increasing cylinder pressures leading to blown head gaskets.
And non-oem oil filters came with goofy oil filter caps, which if used with OEM filters gives you unfiltered oil.
lack of choices in your Country, make options tough. Getting 6L heads, even decked might be really risky. Spare parts, ball joints, steering components, all could be tough.
OEM filters only!!

These concerns could lead to bigger issues.
No need to just bulletproof if things look fine. Get a obd2 live data reader (scangauge2 or app w/bluetooth obd2 adaptor) so you can read hpop, icp, ficm, and watch oil-coolant temps to determine if things look good or not. You need to learn these terms if you consider a 6L.

Why is current owner selling? Big lift and tires usually means tuner, some tuners are bad bad bad for the 6L.

It definitely is a lot to consider. It appears to be in stock condition. Its not in my city so viewing isn't really an option, unless I was certain in buying it. Here is the listing if it makes it any easier for you

170k miles is low for already having injectors done but that is a $3000 usd job.
The 6.0 uses a variable pitch vaned turbo that can be troublesome.

Considering it was used as a tow rig I'd say 250k miles is reasonable expectation for a trans, ball joints and steering bits every 100k , brakes every 70k

just things to consider

He'd have to convert it to right-hand drive - imagine how "easy" that would be for a 13 year old vehicle

Yes the excursion would need to be converted to right hand drive because of its weight and that is at a cost of 25k-30k I had considered this in the past lol

OMG I figured out the underhood picture

The ad expired, but if you search for "ford excursion" you can easily find it.

I have been mystified by the "hoses" on top on engine. Then I realized.......

They had to EXTEND all the PCM, wiring harnesses, a/c, heater core hoses, because !!!!everything!!!! is swapped on the interior from side-to-side, what a major mess this caused. I can only imagine other issues the conversion caused.
