400/434 valvetrain

So I am attempting a 400/434 setup as #5 has broke. My big question is how much lift can I go before needing longer valves or can I squeeze a little more out by cutting guides a smidgen. Heads are cut .025 d5ae a2a and a slightly offset ground 5ma crank. Full assembled height is 10.290 and deck is 10.292. It ran great until my ******* went and gave it too much timing and flooded it (then added more timing) coughed gold ball size pieces of kb2347 into intake. Cam is a Howard's 238101-09 and I want more out of this thing. Hughes 2200-2500 FMX converter and 31 spline mini spooled 3.00 9in... Thoughts, ideas, criticism?

More information would be useful. Vehicle and usage, approximate weight, etc. intake, carb or EFI, etc.

That's a lot of cam... Howards recommends 2800+ stall, so that might help. 3.00 gears are quite tall. I would probably look there for your biggest performance gains. Shouldn't need longer valves. I don't think 351C engines running .750" lift run longer than stock valves.

Weiand Action Plus intake for now till I get adapter plates for a single plane, 3.89 Richmond gear on order, Demon 750 vac secondary with a 500cfm front swap and a 50cc accel pump kit. 81 Bullnose stock weight. Problem with converters is FMXs are kinda odd so I have to get a converter made. Scorpion endurance series rockers 1.73 ratio and a NOS Sniper kit for little oomph as well as Hookers to breathe out through. It's a constant project of mine and I plan on knocking off the local KOTS (king of the street) and taking the fastest streetcar(truck). US Body makes race weight parts to get the nose down a few hundred lbs and a set of AFD 57cc heads (down the line) it's stock suspension for now but going 4 link eventually. Also I really like the Howard's so I may go roller if I can get compression up around 12-13:1 I'll go e85 but dunno yet. Plus I have a pair of Novi 1200 centrifugal superchargers and a worn out 10-71 that I'll need an intake made for if I go that route... Lots of odds and ends here. But basically Im putting it together to drag it.

The whole thing started as a $600 joke and now I'm $20+k into it and already prepping a fresh block.

A little too much going on to give you any real pointers. I'm a naturally aspirated enthusiast, so NOS and superchargers / turbos not so much, but neither work well with a lot of compression. I just happen to have a set of 12.3:1 Venollia pistons for a 400 myself! LOL!

Personally I would stick with an NA setup. Did you have your heads flowed? There is an Aussie racer getting 650HP out of a ported set of 2V heads. A max effort type deal though. Are you running aftermarket rods?

Chryo treated stock rods with ARP bolts, never had heads flowed but I'm sending them back to the shop for a bowl Blend and some more port work. CC'd at 74-74.5 across the board. Venollia pistons?what do those run a set?

This thing is very unhappy, hypereutectic pistons do not like lots of timing. Virgin block on the way though!

Wow, that looks painful. I bet you felt that. Did it literally blow the head off of that valve?

Thinking the shock from predet broke valve and huffed piston, otherwise I wouldn't have emailed you with a request for a single 😉

I should have specified that I suspect the valve broke first... My bad, it broke clean at the guide and haven't jerked pan yet to check. I was VERY happy with the TMI KB2347-30s I purchased

I'll probably order a set of the '53' valves too depending on what payday brings and retainers locks etc

Reason I asked is I can see it looks like the intake valve in #6 cylinder was also getting close and possible touching.

I'll get a closer pic and take a rag to all the chambers about 3:30EST and number all of them before disassembly. I'll make sure to post pics as well. It's definitely tight in there though. Next setup will be almost identical with minor changes (heads cut .025 instead of .020) will definitely be mocking up with clay. Haven't pulled block from truck yet as I have no free stands available to stick it on for disassembly and inspection
