According to that table, you could have a 250 w/ HD Tow and a short bed and get the 3", but a 350 6.7L short bed gets the 2.5". Pretty backwards to me, it seems.

if you think it SEEMS backwards - walk the dealer lot and look at 'em....
I saw DRW Long bed Crew Cabs and SRW trucks that had hitch prep in the bed and a 2 1/2" receiver....I couldn't figure out the "rhyme or reason"

I've never seen a DRW truck without the 3" receiver, unless maybe it was a gas. That has been a constant since day 1.

The "class rating" is an SAE thing and officially stopped at Class IV. More information in Wikipedia article here. Having said that, Class V is a very commonly used term in the industry for "something bigger than IV" (imho) and goes up to pretty insane levels. I think the 3" receiver is new enough to not fit any classification, as well. I'm glad I have one and a ridiculously specced and priced WeighSafe hitch for it so I can just not think about anything but GCVWR. :-)

Just a wild stab here, but does the long wheelbase vs short change the default rear end ratio? If so, they might not put the 3" on the short box because in their prediction you could never need it....

My truck is currently in transit so, I haven't taken delivery yet. F250 CC SB 4x4 diesel. I looked at the list of options in etis and it shows a class III hitch. I will be disappointed if this is the case. It will be the first thing to be changed out. I am expecting a class V hitch and never saw anything when ordering that stated the class of the hitch. If the class III hitch is on the truck, maybe it has something to do with tbe payload down grade. CA registration is all ready a rip off. I feel a class V III hitch on a super duty is a joke.

From what I remember the 3.31 rear is NOT available in an f350 (SRW).
The 3.55 was the best (highway) gear I could find (on dealer lots).

I'm pretty sure that is not the case. My original order was entered incorrectly by my dealer and had the 3.31 rear end on it. I couldn't get the order changed so a new order was put in for 3.55.

3.31 is the default ratio for 18" wheels. 20" wheels or camper package (I think) puts you up to the 3.55 ratio. My 350 has 3.31.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Camper Package is a correct answer. I had to add that package to my order to get 3.55. I stuck with the 18" AT tires.

You would need 2 inserts to go from a 3" to a 2".

With 20" wheels you essentially do have 3.31's. They are taller than the 18's which is why it's required to get 3.55's with 20's so they have the same final ratio. 3.55's with 18's is the only true deeper gear
