I live right off a nice stretch of country hwy so I did a little experiment. 4am no cars on the road, traveling west to east with a slight tail wind, 8 mile stretch with no stopping and almost perfectly flat. Cruise control set at precisely 55mph, the lie-o-meter is telling me I get between 16.8 and 17.5.
On our last trip up into the CO mountains I used 85 on one fill up and then before we came back down I filled with mid grade (87) and I couldn't tell any difference. I do think that the big difference is the high altitude blend not just octane level. I always use 85 in the higher elevations I just tried 87 to see if I could tell the difference.
We averaged 8.4 on the 1800 mile trip with maybe 400 miles not pulling, lots of cross winds and CO mountian grades plus we were pulling the boat behind the trailer.
2016 super cab 4x4 84,000 miles 3.73 gears and 245/70/r17 Cooper AT Empty bed
I use cruise control all of the time. Even in town.
13.2-13.5 around town and 10 miles of hwy (50+mile commute round trip)
I just drove from College Station TX to south of Atlanta. The first 200 miles was back roads, small towns and a bit of four lane. Speeds up to 75 mph. Hand calculated 15.6
The next 200 all I-20 cruise set to 75mph 15.3
The next 150 all I-20 cruise set to 65 mph 17.8. It was dark. I was tired and slowed down but still had to stop for the night.
2017 Ford F-250 Supercab Long Bed 4x4 3:73 Gears 6.2L, Where a city is listed was towing a 6800LB - 7500LB fifth wheel to a campsite or back. Mostly @ 65MPH, all with 87 Octane. Other than going to and from campgrounds I only use the truck to go 20 miles each way to work 5 days a week.
90% of the time i am only in 4th gear because of under 45 PH speed limits, so i only get in the 9 mpg range.
the one time i had it out on the highway i had cruise set at 60 and saw a little over 15 MPG on the 124 mile trip
Getting 11-12 in the city, just got 16.9 on a trip from Dallas to Brownwood TX (S. of Abilene) which was my best yet. Been getting 14.5-15.5 on the highway but as its getting more miles its loosening up.
