dome light problem

Did anyone run across a problem with the interior dome light, more specifically with a burned out diode. Does this need replaced or can it be fixed without the diode in wiring harness. I listened to some mechanics and repaired it without the diode and now it is going funky with the radio, map and dome lights. Any suggestions?
