I think the governor nylon gear wheel is shot in my TH400. have checked vaccum all ok. have checked valve all ok, Took governor out and all seems ok except the gear wheel looks worn..Will the transmission work with out the governor gear? Its the weekend and i cant get a new gear till next week. And have a show to go to tomorrow if trans will work with out gear..
Gov pressure is equal to vehicle speed so if you are doing 40 mph and have a gauge on the governor port it should read 40 lbs. a lot of the time the gov gear wears and looks like an eaten apple core. When this happens you loose gov pressure and the transwill only have low gear
Thats what is happening..Is there any way of doing with out the gear..I have no idea where transmissions are concerned and i can find very little on modding the governor to bypass it..Am i being stupid?
I'm no help at this point. This was just what I remembered from doing transmissions at the Pontiac dealer in the late 80s early 90s. I've never done any modifications sorry
Did you say you only have first gear? If so you may just have a cracked vacuum line running to the modulator on the side of the trans. No automatic shifting without it. I was able to manually up shift without it if I started out in first, but that may have been because I had a valve body kit installed.
I do not think the trans will work without the governer, I used to play with the weights and making them too light would eliminate part throttle shifts.
Drptop I have vacuum checked the vacuum hose and it is solid. The valve is also working. Guess its a case of miss the show and wait till tuesday to get a new gear and hope thats all it is..
It was the governor drive gear. The little plastic gear on the end of the governor was apple core shaped. It was the only thing left to do other than strip the box for a more serious problem.
