electrical issues

67 F250 2WD. I just got the truck running after it has been sitting idle for 2 years. No tail lights, no turn signals, no instrument lights, and no horn. I checked both sides of the fuses and I have no power on either side of the small 2 amp fuse. Not sure if this column is the original as the wires look to be different colors than the other side of the plug. Should I cut away all of the tape on the wiring harness behind the instrument panel to make it easy to follow the wires? Are there relays for these circuits and if so where are they located?

When you checked the fuse how did you test it, light or meter and did you test on the fuse ends or the holders?

I have found f rt om sitting the fuse & holders get a build up and will not pass power thru them.

If you don't have power to the fuse no need to pull off the tape as you will not have power there also.

The fuse box is hanging under the dash not mounted to the firewall so I was able to test the back terminals. I used a continuity tester and probed the terminal back and front. No power there at all.

I'm assuming you checked all the light bulbs & the sockets for 12v power. Also the light switch controls the dash lights by turning the right to left.

May be this will help some.

Thanks that diagram should help out. I've checked the instrument bulb sockets and they have no power. Next step is to check all of the sockets to the rear of the truck and verify no power.

I was probing the connector that comes off of the steering column with the continuity tester light. I touched the blue wire with the yellow stripe and the horn sounded. The tester did not light when I did this so I think that the tester was passing through the current to the ground. At least I know that the horn is capable of working. If I am not mistaken the horn switch, switches the circuit on the negative? I think I need to remove the horn switch to check it. How do I remove the horn button from the center of the steering wheel?

Push down turn to the left and lift it off.

I have the horn button off. I checked between the spring button and a ground and it is open. I think I'll have to pull off the wheel. Do I need a puller or can I thread some bolts into the two holes that are there to remove it?

These trucks have a steering flex joint at the lower end of the shaft that couples to the steering box.

This coupler is also known as a rag joint the has a buss wire to cross over the ground circuit which over time of many yrs cause to break a part this buss wire.

Another reason horns stop working but sounds like yours is okay.

I'll check on that cross over wire. Mine may not be good. I only got the horn to sound by probing with a continuity tester and the tester was grounded to another location not at the column.

I got power to all of the fuses so the instrument panel lights are now working. Still no tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, or horn. The front headlights work as well as the front parking lights. I am unsure about the turn signal flasher. Is the turn signal flasher square and attached to the back of the instrument cluster? I cannot find a round flasher anywhere in the area where it shows in the diagrams and there are no harness plugs that are not hooked up to anything on the left side of the wiring harness. There is a round flasher above the ashtray. Is this for the warning lights flasher system? The round flasher only has one wire hooked up to it. There is another wire hanging near it but it is a male connector and the flasher also has male connectors.

The flasher is a round can just like the warning light one. The turn signals and brake lights all go through the turn signal switch in the steering column.

Made some progress. I made up a harness for the flasher because there was one male and one female connector which didn't make sense to me. The turn signals work but there is a problem: they work with the ignition in the off position. I still don't see anywhere that I can plug in the emergency flasher. There doesn't seem to be any plugs near where it should be. There are a couple of wires with nothing connected but I'll have to trace where they go. These wires have right angle connectors like the ones used on the oil pressure switch. The tail light problems were all in the rear harness under the truck. Everything was a real mess under there. I sorted everything out and I got one side rewired and it stated to rain so I still need to finish the other side.
