Hey everyone, hope you're doing better than I am lol. I've just recently purchased a '10 f150 5.4l fx4 (95000mi) and already it knocks when I idle, it only starts knocking when I've been driving it a while, 1 to 2 hrs and I know I got screwed, I knew it looked too good to be true, I just wanna know if it's possible and how much it would be to convert it to a diesel. I don't know much about trucks but I ain't a novice either. Thanks for any input, Two mechanics have said its bad cam phasers due to bad planning on the engine makers part concerning the oil pump. If it's a bad engine I don't wanna fix it just to have it break again.
There is a company that makes a lockout for the cam phasers to end this madness. Will require a PCM calibration change as well. The phasers are not the only issue though, the auto tensioners and chain buffers are also a horrible design...Make sure to use the correct oil, anything thicker blows the gaskets on the hydraulic chain tensioners.
That's a nice truck. 3v 5.4 was and is a POS IMO, we had a couple go bad even tho they were maintained good. A diesel would be a major, major headache nothing will work with the modern electronics. Do as KeyKeeper mentioned and gentle can phaser lock with a tuner and be done with the headache once and for all. Autozone actually carries it on their parts catalog for like $500
Hey man, sorry to hijack a different post but I saw where you took seats to get re-upholstered in Jaurez and I'm intrigued. My 2000 F250 needs redone. Guess what? I live in Las Cruces. If you want to text me I can be reached at two one zero 391 fifty 8 twenty. My name is Gary.

Thanks for the info, If it comes down to getting a used engine I'll definitely be throwing that in with it, do you think the phasers are the problem though, this knocking is not constant and I've tried to get it to happen again by warming it up for 20min then driving for 45 or so, still won't replicate the noise for a vid

Thanks for the advice, the dealer has said that he would look at the vehicle and "Make it right" I told him a shop said it would be over 1k and he said "I'll buy the part and it won't cost me as much because I pay my guys salary", I'm inclined to trust him, I'm gonna mention this fix when I go back in two days

Thanks for the advice, dealer said come back Monday and we'll " Make it Right" I wanna trust the guy but you know how used car dealerships reputations are, I'm gonna mention this fix when I go there and maybe they'll listen, told him one mechanic said it would be 1k and he said it won't cost him that much cause his guys are paid salary and all he has to pay for is the part. And thank you for the compliment on the truck, I love it but this ordeal is so disappointing and has got me stressed out

If the dealer is trying to "make it right", let them. I would insist on up graded oil pump, if they do it. ( Lots of info on YouTube about ithttps://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=5.4+3v+oil+pump+upgrade. ) Even if you pay the price difference between what they were putting in. Also make sure it is OEM phasers and tensioners and might as well throw in timing chains too.
I would discuss this over with the dealership prior to getting the work done....so that there is no misunderstanding as to what you expect/want. and so you know what they are going to do and how much each of you are paying for.
With proper maintenance the 5.4 can be very reliable for a very long time.
AND yes swapping out for a diesel would be more headache and money spent than it would be worth. It can be done I'm sure...but
