Have recently purchased a 1991 Explorer Sport. Good running truck except that on occasion..I come out to the truck and the battery is dead. This happens once to twice a week..daily driving.
Had heard something about a relay causing a draw on the system. Vehicle does have a FORD Dealer installed alarm..which has been disconnected. Other than that it is stock.
Vehicle has a new battery and Charging system is putting out within specs.
Any ideas out there?? Sure it is something simple.
It sounds like you have a battery drain. Here's a way to check... disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Remove the under the hood light. Using a 12volt test light, connect one end to the disconnected cable, and the other to the negative post. If the light lights, then you have a draw. To help isolate the problem, start removing fuses in an attempt to get the light to go out. Once you've identified the fuse, that's the circuit you need to further concentrate on.
Some have reported the the fuel pump relay sticking on. This would cause a 4A drain that would discharge the battery on occasion. This would be a likely cause if the charging system otherwise seems normal.
