Doesn't start when cold. Please confirm diagnostics.

2002 in an Excursion. about 145,xxx miles. New to me @ about 135,xxx miles.

If the temps drop into the 40's, it starts to give issue of hard starting. When the temps are below zero, she will not start at all. One I have it started, it will fire back up as long as its still warm.

When it is hard starting, I turn the key, wait for the mileage to show up and hit the starter. It will fire, stumble, maybe die, and after about 2 seconds, pick up and run fine. Runs perfectly fine once it is running. Really does act like its starving for fuel.

Put the fuel gauge on it and it can take 3+ cycles of the keyswitch to get pressure up to spec. I never do hear the fuel pump run, first vehicle I can't hear it on.

Once running, it runs perfectly fine. Block heater makes no difference to help it start. New fuel filter in, had it to Ford and they gave me a So helpful.. But they were more than willing to start throwing random parts at it for half the value of the vehicle to eventually find it....

The only other thing is it smells funny when I start it. Not sure how to describe it, almost like antifreeze being burnt, but my coolant level never changes. The engine also seems a bit doggy compared to trucks with the same engine (its in an Excursion).

I'm thinking fuel pump time. Thoughts?

Fuel pump or maybe clogged up filter was my first thought.

Maybe a bad IAC (idle air control sensor)? Take it out and and clean it, and see if that helps.

To diagnose the IAC, just press on the gas-pedal slightly as you go to start it. If it fires right up, it's the IAC.

I'll give that a try.

Cylinder head temp sensor

I have read a few places that the cylinder head coolant temp sensor can cause this.
