This was my Dads truck which I am passing on to my son in law. For the most part it seems to be in pretty fair shape. The Odometer says 239K but the previous owner says they had Ford install a brand new engine around 210K. I tend to believe them because the engine still has the paper stickers on it and there isn't a drop of oil anywhere on this thing. Previous owner put dual exhaust with no emissions stuff. (did a 92 come with a cat?)Best thing is the AC still works.
Sat for 7 or 8 years due to a rear brake locking up and Dad had other vehicles to drive.
New batt, new front tank, new fuel pump (in new tank) New rear drums, shoes and wheel cylinders.
Known issues:
On the road this thing cuts out to no power (like it dies but doesn't) if you try to floor it or going up a hill. In park it revs normal. It did not do this a couple of weeks ago when we first got it running.
Back fires when cold if trying to rev a little to warm. May or may not be related to number 1.
Drivers window won't roll down.
Passengers window works backwards to the switch.
Rear abs light stays on.
1 & 5 are my main concerns. We haven't pulled the door panel yet to check the switch for the windows. The back firing thing greatly diminishes once it warms up. I think new wires plugs are in order... just because.
SOoooooo
Anyone been down this road with an engine cutting out while on the road?
Probably on the right track when you mention changing wires. Have a look at your plugs, cap and rotor at the same time. Had something similar symptoms wise with an older carbureted 5.8. Many will swear by the Motorcraft plugs. I was running Champions which had lasted around 10K miles. They were starting to foul, but that likely was due to the well worn engine. I replaced them with Bosch Platinum's, (reportedly a no-no), but it runs just fine so far.
