2001 Ranger

a friend took his 2001 ranger 2WD to a shop they diagnosed a blown head gasket and I thought it would be an easy fix. new heads gaskets and back on the road , right? when we were trying to load it on the trailer he started it. It ran for a second and died never to start again!! I got it to my little shop of horrors and replaced the heads (no problems with the torque specs or getting everything put back together) A quick question!! (they never really are) the plug wiring didn't look as it shows in the diagram I tried to start it and it cranks fine but didn't start so i wired the plugs according to the diagram at Autozone and it still won't start? any suggestions?
Thanks for all the help

A blown head gasket would not keep the truck from starting..I would scan it for codes,,,you need a OBD2 scan tool and either a smart phone or laptop and download free program called forscan,,,Autozone will scan it for free but if not running getting it there would be a pain,,,just buy a scan tool and it will be handy on most cars and trucks,,,,post your codes here and we all will try and help you out..Amazon has the scan tool for less than $50.00,,,Pawpaw probally has a tread on here about ELM scantools

What kind of engine is it? I think they put 3 different types of motors in the 2001 Ranger.
