Tjc I'd agree, but, when I bought my truck at 155k it had all original ignition parts. And let me tell you the plugs were a bear to get out. But the rotor hadn't committed self inflicted death by fire lol
i had a toy yoda come in "not running rite in the rain" around 15 years back.
car had if i remember correctly around 170k miles on it.
just so happened to be dam when it came in. i popped the hood, and it looked like a lightning storm under the hood.
never had a tune up. the wires fell apart when i touched them. there were no tips left on the plugs, and the rotor and cap contacts were burned almost completely away.
car ran great for two months after the tuneup, then blew a head gasket.
she brought it back, and i told her i could rebuild it for $500, but the car was not worth that much money.
Around 30 years ago, I was involved in a project that installed computer aided dispatch equipment for the taxi industry. One operator was very frustrated with his GM product that seemingly would not allow this system to operate. As soon as the engine was started, the screen would display garbage. The car ran fine but eventually we found the rotor had arced through the thin plastic under the center contact to the shaft. Only saw this on GM HEI systems. Replacing the rotor cleared up the problem. We kept a stock of HEI rotors on hand as this was a very common problem. Of course, the operators always blamed the computer equipment, but it was pretty easy to prove it was lack of vehicle maintenance.
