Missing freeze plug, temp sender, or...?
During my once around of the truck to make sure everything was still in one piece, I noticed that there was a bit of oil on the ground. Not a lot, but a bit, so I decided to investigate further. The last time I drove the truck, I noticed there was a faint smell of burning oil after I shut her down, but I really didn't see anything at that time. It was also dark, and late, and cold, so I didn't look too hard.
Today, I found what looks like a missing freeze plug on the driver's side rear of the engine (215-6). Looking closer, I saw a threaded bung inside the opening, and my first thought was it was a temp sender that was missing. There does seem to be quite a bit of oil on the block at that location, so I'm guessing the sender (or whatever it is) has been gone for a while. I checked the oil before I drove it last and everything seemed fine, so...I'm at loss.
Of course, I can't find my shop manual to verify this, so I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction.
Would the missing part be something like this, perhaps?
I think I can probably find a replacement online somewhere, but would it be ok to plug the opening if the crankcase was vented somewhere else - like through the oil filler or elsewhere in the valve cover?
