Ranger Will Not Start
Returned home from approx. a 25 mile drive. 15 minutes later attempted to leave for a short errand, but engine fails to start.
Driveway on slight incline, so place in 3rd gear, turned ignition on, let it vehicle roll, then engaged clutch to "jump-start". Seemed to start, but engine shook significantly as if flooded or something, then just died. Attempted to re-start using starter motor, but it seemed to "try" to start, but engine shook violently as if severely out of time. Following attempt to start only shook engine seriously while starter motor engaged, but seemed to be no "firing" or attempt by engine to start.
No codes showing on OBD II.
Fuel pump failure; timing chain failure; crankshaft position sensor failure; what????
Any help will help will be most appreciated.
Thank you kindly.
Thumper
The cap is supposed to be vented, and a common issue we hear about is when it fails it can act like like an old non vented type gas cap.
It is a shot in the dark
Truck's been sitting since Sunday when this happened. I had the fuel cap off then, listening for fuel pump when ignition on. Couldn't hear it, but never have been able to hear it anyway.
Anyway, on your appreciated advice, figured I'd give 'er a shot: took fuel cap off, started truck, replaced fuel cap. Now I'm bumfuzzled: Did that do the trick, or was it a flaky problem that will return when most inconvenient? Hate a vehicle you can't trust!
I certainly do appreciate your kind response, though. Thanks again!
If it acts out again before you can scan it, Power relays are a common problem part with intermittent no starts, so next time it acts out & you can't hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds at KOER, try thumping the fuel pump power relay & see if it'll start, or try swapping it out for a like one not needed to crank, or run the engine & see if it'll wake up & let us know what you find.
First thing I would do if it happens again. Loosen the gas cap and turn the key from off to on 3 times to pump gas to the engine, then try to start it. If it works, buy a new gas cap.
If it doesn't work, swap relays and try it.
I personally would change out the fuel filter, just to get everything to a baseline. I always right the current mileage on mine with a marker then spin it to the top.
And get the scantool like pawpaw says, I have to get one myself, it seems silly not to have one.
