01 Navigator - Did I blow my transmission? Repairable?
Hey guys, I wanted to ask your thoughts on how bad the damage to my transmission was based on this scenario. As well as any suggestions you have.
Yesterday, it was about 93f here and I used a 2001 Lincoln Navigator to tow a 6,000lb load about 85 miles total (75 miles highway + 10 miles suburb with light stop and go).
Everything was smooth for 83 of the 85 miles, no issues at all. With about 2 miles left I stopped at a light and noticed the transmission slipped a bit, and then went. I drove the last 2 miles with it slipping and when I parked it I noticed the trail and major transmission fluid leak. I had to move it about 40 more feet so I allowed it to cool about 10mins and added 0.5qt transmission fluid and 0.5qt lucas stop slip I had already which allowed me to move it the final 40 feet. I ended up with another good puddle until it cooled fully.
I checked it today and Fluid was just at the very bottom of the stick so I added a bit more and warmed her up for the test today. Unfortunately I could barley get it to shift to 1st of reverse. It slipped into gear with a hair of throttle. I let it idle for 10 minutes and shifted 1st and reverse (barley slipped in with some throttle) to attempt to see the location of the leak and it did not start leaking again. I was not able to determine the leak location as the transmission pan near the drain and the transfer case near the plug and mostly everything directly between those two were covered with fluid from yesterday.
That is where I am at now. Is their any hope or is it gone?

The trans overheated and blew out the front pump/converter seal.
When the fluid temperature gets above 250 degrees F for very long your in the danger zone.
When towing out of overdrive the converter is unlocked and goes into hydraulic fluid slipping same as the old time 3speed automatics that did not have lockup converters..
This fluid shearing heats the fluid beyond normal.
Your total gross combined weight was over 12,000 pounds the trans had to move.
Its time for the transmission shop.
Good luck.
