I have a 01 F250 Powerstroke. 4 inch left and now aftermarket items other than tires.
I loaned my son in law the truck to haul a bobcat and a bunch of rock. I told him to take the overdrive off when doing this. The transmission was replaced a little over 4 years ago and 34500 miles ago. The transmission has a 36 month or 100K warranty so time wise it is gone but not milage wise
Today it is about 93 degrees and when he stopped the truck it leaked about 1 to 1.5 quarts of transmission fluid on the street. He called me and I advised him to park it and not drive it again until I can get it towed. He said it looked like the leak came from the back of the pan or someplace like that towards the back. There was no slipping in the tranny and the transmission fluid is full when at operating temperature, no burned smell or anything. Did not continue to leak like that anymore but has a small drip according to him. Probably just excess tranny fluid. Any thoughts on this issue and any advise? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks a milion!
Sounds like the fluid may have been overfilled and expanded due the load/heat and puked out the trans vent. This could run down the top of the trans case and exit at the rear.
It might have been 1-2 quarts high and puked out to where it reads normal on the stick. FYI, this tranny was built to tow in overdrive unless it starts hunting for gears then I would take it out of OD.
So I think I will get the fluid changed and a new filter and drive it unless I find it continues to do that. My son in law says it is not leaking anymore but he has let it sit for about 5 hours now.
What do you guys think?
When I had the tranny replaced the dealership told me to tow in that mode. I remember asking them if that meant even my small 4X8 foot trailer and they said yes. I thought that was stupid for a diesel but I do it anyway.
Your dealer dont know much. Mark K on here is the expert on this tranny, that's because he designed and engineered the 4R100 and when he says you can tow in OD most of us listen.
How many miles do you have on that tranny fluid? Its recommended the fluid be changed every 30k. If your under that then I would just monitor it until its time to change the fluid. If you dont know how many miles are on the fluid or are over 30k then I would drain and flush and replace the filter. Mercon V ATF is what you need to use. Roughly 20 quarts for a flush.
I think if the fluid is full and it isn't leaking you can safely drive it.

You were right, they were being stupid. It's your decision, you won't hurt the trans either way. Towing with overdrive off will just burn quite a bit more fuel, but fuel is cheap.
That and also if he was backing the trailer loaded with the Bobcat up a decent distance he could have heated the tranny up to the point where the seal on the tailshaft heats up and won't seal properly. Then it will leak until it cools down. I have been told, if you do it once, it usually isn't a problem again. If you do it more than once, it usually will trash the seal and need replacement.
Bottom line is, it got HOT. If it happend once, it will happen again. Do you have a Trans temp gauge? You need one. Pretty easy to install. Are you still running the stock tans cooler? You should look into the 6.0 replacement. Also are you running a tuner with a tow tune? if not you should look into that. I love the way mine shifts when in tow tune. Gauges, 6.0 cooler and DP Tuner and would not tow without it.
