Question Braided Brake Hoses... ?

Hi all.
I just about had a heart attack on the tollway this afternoon. Traffic came to an abrupt stop and I had to really put my foot into the brakes...and downshifted to low just to get her to stop. Then, my foot went ALL the way to the floor. I had about 5% brakes left so I was able to hobble her back home. Left front brake line coming from the caliper blew out.

I was looking into braided hoses anyways since the pedal seems a bit spongy since I put the 20" Rock Stars and 35" Nittos on it.

I have a 4" lift, what braided brake hoses do you all recommend ?

Thanks !

Scott

For my 99 CCSB Triton V10 I will be going with PMF Suspension and their 5pc kit.

http://www.pmfsuspension.com

Which pads and rotors do you have?

Welcome to Precision Metal Fabrication - USA Built suspension systems

I have the Napa Heavy Duty rotors and O'Reilley's Heavy Duty pads. (I'm not happy with the pads, might go with EBC)

you have a 2000 Superduty and you're from the rust belt. I think when you start taking those lines off, you're not going to stop until you get to the ABS behind the driver side fender. Were I you, I'd just get a whole new hard and braided line kit from somewhere like fine lines.com and redo the whole truck. If you haven't done the hard lines yet, I'm willing to bet the rear line that runs down the driver side frame rail is *close* to done. it always seems to rust out at the retainer clips.

Believe it or not, the hard lines are all in pretty good shape. For the last 10 years, I've been storing it for the winter and driving my Explorer. Only rust that's on the truck was under the doors where moisture always gets trapped under that weatherstripping.

I'll be able to get a better look once I start pulling wheels off, I suppose.

I highly recommend using stainless hoses and NiCopp brake like wherever possible. I did a write up on it:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1486238-brake-line-and-hose-write-up.html

I went with Crown hoses that were custom made from KLM Performance, and would advise you not to go this route unless you have a lift. Shipping was slow, customer service was hard to deal with (they were polite but rarely answered the phones), and the hoses were not correctly made.

If you're stock height, get the Russell hose kit. We used Russell Universal hoses for the rear calipers because nobody sells just the rear. Plus these are from Summit and Summit is fantastic.

100% agree. When I did my brake lines, it was because the rear line rotted out right by the fuel tank. I noticed a section of brake line still in there, as well as a line spliced in. It was quite obvious to me that this line has been repaired before in the exact spot.

That means this truck has had three rear brake lines in its life... 1999 in southern Ohio, used to make commercial trucking runs up to Canada.

In my experience the first hard brake line to rot out is the one at the gas tank. Also one of the harder ones to get at.

I'll be putting braided stainless on my 04' this year. Probably from PMF. Will try tightening up the brake booster slightly too to get the pedal harder. I have cryo slotted front and rear now with EBC Yellow Stuff all around. Stops pretty darn good but the pads are very dusty.

Thanks guys. My hard lines are all still in good shape since I had been storing it over the last 10 years. I'm the second owner (bought it 2 years old) so I know there's been no other brake work done other than rotors/pads.

With my 4" lift, what braided hoses should I go with? I've heard stories that some of them need to be trimmed etc. for a lifted truck. I'm looking for a direct bolt-on set. I need to get this thing fixed pretty quick since I'm taking it to Missouri in a couple weeks.

I doubt you're gonna get hoses that long quickly. Mine took three weeks and that's after calling and bitching to KLM about how they weren't getting my order out in the time they said.

You want the set for 4"-6" lift. Ford S/S Braided Brake Lines

I just began installing braided stainless brake hoses on my 2003 F250. I bought my truck used, but compared my Father in Laws F250 my truck is 4" taller in front. I bought Russell hoses #696490 from Oil burning Toys. The hoses cost about $145.00 for all 5 and arrived quickly. The front hoses are exactly the length of the worn out hoses I am removing. One thing I noticed was the Ford clip wouldn't slide through the retaining groove on the frame end the hose. I ground two small bumps off the clips with a Dremel and looks good now.
