i have a 1978 f-100 2wd standard cab short bed. i was wondreing how i would go about finding out which axle i had and they gear ratio. the tag is no longer there so i have no idea what to do. i now i can use the vin to find it out but i dont know where to look for the vin break down any help would be great thanks
well for the axle it should be a ford 9 inch, it's really easy to notice because it doesn't have a diff cover instead the back of it is solid and it has a third member that holds the gears.
As for the gears its possible on an older truck that the gears might have been changed anyway so the VIN might not tell you anything. Here's a calculator somebody showed me that will tell you the gears...as long as you know everything else: speed, rpms, tranny gear, tire diameter. http://www.4lo.com/
Then you definately have the ford 9". If you have a manual transmission and a tachometer, you can calculate your gear ratio.
Failing that, you can either take the rear end apart and count the teeth, or you can jack up one side of the rear axle. I think if you spin the rear tire twice around and count the number of driveshaft revolutions, you'll have your gear ratio.
imne does have a diff cover but everything is stoke nothign has been changed. the reason im trying to find out is i want to put a locker in it. im not sure which way to go on thet either. dont know if i want a eton, arb, or detroit locker. never had one so i to know which is best any help with that would be great too
