what axle

ok i have a 1978 f-100 2wd standard cab short bed.it has a 300 in it. i was wondering how i could find out which axle and gear ratio i had. the tag is no longer there thanks for any help

what axle

Jack up one side of the rear,and mark the backing plate to the drum,and then mark the pinion to the housing,and then spin drum 2 turn's,and count how many time's the pinion turn's.for exsample if it turn's 3.5 time's to 2 full turn's=3:54's.This is for limited slip type's.Does the cover come off from the rear of rearend or does it come off from the front?probaly a 9".This i was tought in scrapyard school.(LOL)

What does say on the Rating plate riveted to the door face where it latches ?

what axle

they houseing plate bolts onto the back so its not a 9 in.the reason i want to know is i want to put in a locker would you guys suggest buying a new locker and possibly the whole rear end or go to the junk yard and find one? thanks for the help

I would bet it's a 2.75

300 I6's came with a taller gear than that.

Maybe 3.00 or 3.25's.

My '79 F100 W/300 has a 2.73. Pitiful too with 31's. But it is an open nine.

what axle

so would you recommend i buy a 9in rearendout of a junkyard? did they come with a locker in them?

I just looked at my tag, its a 2.75. I am the orginal owner and it came with a std trans and 300 CID engine. 1979 f-100 custom
