I have read and talked to several (more than I like to recall) people about an engine oiling kit for the old (59 272 engine) y blocks that didn't get oil to the top end. I have not been able to locate one of these kits. Nor have I ever installed one. I am new to the site and would appreciate any help at all.
Welcome to the site, Jim! I'm sure you'll find us all very helpful, nice, and if nothing else, extremely opinionated to Fords! I know nothing of the y-blocks, but there is another forum for y-blocks on this site that you may want to pose this question to.
Hmmm, this is a Y Block forum so what better place to ask?
The oiler kits show on EPay regularly and are only in the $25 region.
However it is only a stop gap measure that should instead be fixed.
Old type non detergent oil was the primary reason for lots of Y Block problems.
These days it is better to take the rockers all apart and rebuild. You may also find worn shafts and rockers, parts are available.
With a modern 20W50 such as Castrol GTX or a CG/CH/CI 10W40 diesel grade oil there should never be any more top end oiling problems.
The problem with the top end oiling was generally plugged galleries caused by gunk ( can't think of a better technical term ) causing blockage. Sometimes, though, it was caused by the cam bearings turning slightly and blocking the hole. Believe it or not, the official way to fix this at the Ford garage was to take a long drill bit and run it down through the passage and drill a new hole in the bearing. This came from an old Ford mechanic, and I think the drill bit may have been supplied as a Ford tool. Apparently the early Y-blocks ( mostly 239's and 272's ) had cam bearing alignment problems, too. If they are replaced during the rebuild processs, often the cam is hard, if not impossible, to install. Apparently the bearings were line reamed at the factory. This was not a problem in the later Y's as machining improved at the factory.
