Okay so I got a 7.3idi in my 85 4 door f250 4"lift 35s flat bed my truck weighs in at about 7300lbs dry so I want to add a little performance without spending $3000 on a turbo kit I'm not looking to go run 10s in the 1/4 mile I just want it to run well enough to pull a car or a truck on a trailer 65-75mph fairly easy so I got new injectors and a freshly rebuilt injection pump both replaced a 3 months ago so the fuel system is pretty heathy now getting to the turbo question a friend of mine gave me a duramax turbo for free the turbo is in really good shape so my question is is it possible/worth it to use it on the 7.3idi my overal goal is to run low boost 6-10psi until I have time to stud the motor I will definitely be running a power stroke inner cooler setup all the way and a free flowing exhaust with a pyro gauges and everything I'm not really new to 6.9/7.3idis but I'm a rookie in the turbo world so Is it possible to run the duramax turbo or should I put it on Craigslist and hunt for used system
For the kind of boost numbers you are looking to run, and for the ease of installation, I'd say sell the duramax turbo and look for an ATS 088 complete kit. I hit 12lbs of boost at 3000rpms with mine, fresh IP turned one flat. 4inch exhaust.
For all the work plumbing everything and the expense of buying all the additional parts you would be much better off finding a complete kit or truck and moving the turbo over, exhaust and all. The dealer installed 088's usually ran a 3" downpipe, and 3.5 inch exhaust, they would gut the stock muffler and just run it. I didn't get my boost gauge working until after going to the 4 inch exhaust with a straight flow muffler, I think I was making about 9lbs with the 3.5" exhaust at 3k rpms.
The high performance guys will talk about all the great new kits and power you can produce, and that is fine if that is what you want. If you are after good boost, that makes power in your engines power band, that will not cause addition reliability issues, running moderate boost, a 088 will do it. They are generally the most affordable options. There may even be a member here with a complete kit they can sell you. Put a post in parts wanted thread.
Yeah that's what I was hoping to hear I'm all for spending the time and money to fab up my own turbo kit but maybe it will cost the same in the end maybe I should hold off until I can find a good deal on a used kit
