Tranny issues

hello all. im having an issue with my 2000 F250 V10 4x4. blew the trans a couple weeks back and bought a low miles used one. mechanic put it in yesterday and now it will shift up no problems but when he stops it doesnt downshift back to first. if he shuts off the truck and starts it again its in first again...any ideas on what could be happening? also seems to be shifting hard he said. its the 4l100 trans.

I really don't know much about these transmissions, but I had a Jeep with this issue and it was the shift solenoids.
