I've been told 2 ways to take out the engine. One is to dismantle the front end and the other was to lift the cab off. Now don't laugh, but I 've been told this has been done. Anyone have any suggestions. I figure the whole job will be between $4 - 5,000 for engine and installation. Book value is about $4600.HMMM..maybe I can part it out ???
Pull the front end as in the suspension or fenders grille..i mena what all this entail? If it takes more than just yanking the motor stragith out the engine bay taht is a crock-o-crap (i mean why would Ford make something like that?)
i just removed my engine right through the engine bay. had to remove the top end first. it hit the firewall, because the 4.2 sits so far back. in the process of reassembling new engine with a few addons. will post pics next week. i paid 2000 for new motor and have about 1500 in addons(headers, exhaust, throttle body, air filter, and chip) dont know how well it all will work yet!

i have talked to a buddy of mine who is an ASE cert master tech, he told me that there is alot of trouble changing the 4.2L to the 5.4L the cost for the 5.4L is anywhere fron $2500-5000 depending on where you get it, then you have to swap all electronics that include the engine, the fuel delivery system has to be upgraded, the engine and tranny mounts are diffrent and the rear axle is diffrent im told. The cost to swap it out would be less than the down payment on a new one with the 5.4L in it. if you do figure out how though let me know i wanna do it to mine...lol i was actually eyeballin' my old 5.8L 351W thinking bout doin the whole thing old school carbs but there goes my warranty

Thats what I would do.. But to an older one like a 97' It would make a cheap swap, with good power, and decent milage.
I was told that the ford discontinue making the 4.2L V6. I am in the process of overhauling mine. Its a 1997 canadial XLT 4x2 can anyone confirm if this is true. Also if it is not true how could I get a quote for a brand new factory engine the same size
Do A web search for Jasper engines. They offer a 3 year warranty and the warranty is tranferable to another owner. I think a 4.2L engine was approximately $2700.00.
Trash those 4.2s. They are the biggest piece of crap Ford has ever produced. My 97 ford truck has lived a great life. better than regular oil and filter changes. Iv'e treated it with kid gloves. When I bought it, I thought it was going to be as good as the 300 c.i. Boy was I wrong? I don't know anyone who has not had problems with Fords latest better idea. If ford does not own up to their mistake and make this right, I have bought my last one...jcarker

I guess you bought a lemon. My 4.2 has been perfect for the life of it so far. It's got plenty of power and is very nice. I'm definately satisfied with my truck as it is definately not a piece of crap like you put it. If you think the 4.2 is garbage, you shouldn't have bought one. There are plenty of guys in here who will agree with me that the 4.2 is a pretty awsome truck.
Oh I just noticed you said yours is a 97... That was the first production year of the 4.2 in the Ford. The 97 and 98 have the most problems out of all the 4.2's. The problems were fixed with the 1999+ Fords. You may want to take a look at this website for more info.
