where can I find the serial number on my engine to confirm if its a W,C or M? And when i find it how do i tell what it is? We only realized it was 351 when the 302 firing order didnt work (uncle said it was a 302, its not). I would like to find the serial number and confirm my engine before doing any good work. I will also post this on the 303/351W forum as well. Thank you all for the help
Count the valve cover bolts. 6 is Windsor 8 is Cleveland. The 400 and the 351M are both a Cleveland 335 series engine so they also would have 8. the 351M/400 is wider than a 351C because of the taller deck height. The 351M/400 also uses the same tranny bolt pattern as the 460/429. The 351C uses the same tranny bolt pattern as the 351W/302W.

Well said, brother. The only thing I can add is that the 335 Series engines have their fuel pump bolts in a vertical pattern.
Also, there are no serial numbers on these engines. But, they do have casting numbers, and you can decode them via the info on Bubba's site: M-Block 351M/400 Parts Reference. And pictures and descriptions of where to find the casting code are here: M-Block 351M/400 Photo Archive.
In addition to what has been already said.......If you do have a 'C,' a number - most likely a 2, or could be a 4, will be embossed on the corners of the heads...clearly visible and only particular to Clevelands......the heads, anyway.
Those numbers represent 2v or 4v.
C Block: The bell housing bolt pattern will be slightly rounded, will not have a 1.0"x0.75"x3.0" cast dealie in front and to the right (looking head on) of the distributor.

Well this is only partly true, the later Cleveland heads don't have either number cast in the corners
