I'm sure this has been asked many times but any searches I've done comes up with all kinds of stuff!
After placing the order, NORMALLY how long does it take to get a VIN?
FWIW, I was never able to track my order by the dealer order number. The VIN was the only thing that ever worked for me.
Also be advised that the COTUS web site(s) are somewhat finicky. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. There are 3 different COTUS web sites (that I found). cotusa, cotusb, and cotus.
We made a deal 4/18. Order was picked up 4/19 and I had a VIN 4/21. Based on what I have seen here I was quite surprised to see a VIN within a few days. My window sticker was released yesterday 5/10 and truck shows "in production." Estimated delivery has always shown 5/29, but I am hoping that moves up once production is complete as my dealer is pretty close to the assembly plant.
My '16 took 2 months from order to keys-in-hand. My F-in-L just did an order as well and it also took 2 months. So having a VIN is good, but with the tracker systems not very reliable I'd just put a magic mark on your calendar two months out from your order date.
Orders get picked up on Thrusdays. So from the time you order, you'll at least wait until Thursday or Friday to get anything. From there it's based on Fords production cycle as well as dealership allocation. I've had ordered picked up with a VIN after one day, and I've had them come over a month later. So there really isn't a normal, it's based on somewhat knowable information. I personally don't generally keep track of allocation or production cycles and just tell everyone to expect 10-12 weeks for an order. I do give weekly updates as I see changes, but every dealership and probably every salesman does it a little different.

I heard from my salesman with a Vin # 1FTBW3UGH5HKB25088 WITH A BUILD ON 6/7 and ETA of 7/9 -7/15.
Will those dates change? Also the Vin # number does not work on any sites I have tried.
As someone who worked in logistics for many, many years, the part I found interesting when I ordered my truck was the time spent in transit.
Timeline:
Order placed at dealership - 12 March 2016
VIN assigned - 25 March 2017
Truck build completed on 7 April and showed awaiting shipment per COTUS, also was able to print the ETIS data this date. Estimated delivery date per COTUS was 30 April.
Truck delivered to dealership in Nevada on 17 May 2016.
That last is the part I find ridiculous. 6 weeks to go 1800 miles. Especially after showing an estimated delivery date of 30 April. I would have been fired from my logistics job if I could not arrange transportation that would have taken less than a week! But I guess Ford has unions and contracts and set procedures to deal with.
So, as Frantz said, expect to wait 10-12 weeks from the time you order until you pick up the truck. But most of that time that truck is in transit.

Need to fill up the train before departing. Ford isn't going to ship 1 truck at a time.
Our delivery was pretty close to prediction. It might have been a week ahead of schedule if it hadn't sit at the train depot for a week. In retrospect though, I imagine that all Ford vehicles for North California come into a single depot in the East Bay. That place has got to be a zoo.
Normally the dates don't change too much, but it's certainly not set in stone. Being towards the end of production, you have a good chance of it being pretty accurate.
