I've searched the forum for a bit and couldn't find an answer to this particular issue.
The rear fuel tank hasn't worked since I bought the truck. I'm going on a long trip pulling an RV and could really use the extra fuel capacity, the shop I took it to pulled the tank and the fuel pump was disentegrated. We wound up replacing the tank, the pigtail connection to the fuel pump (which had been cut), and the fuel pump. I picked it up from the shop, put 10 gallons of gas in it.....no change.
When I select the rear tank, the fuel gauge drops below empty and the truck continues to run off of the front tank (when I switch back to the front the level has dropped). It's an 86 5.0 L EFI
Any recommendations on what I should troubleshoot first? Does this sound like the selector valve or the switch?
He doesn't have a 3 port. He has fuel injection so he has a 6 port, and he may have the "fuel reservoir" type switching valve where the pump pressure does the switching.
See if you have something on your frame that looks like this.
Since the fuel gauge drops to empty when the rear tank is selected then there could be a problem with the fuel tank selector switch, as shown below. Since that valve is powered by the fuel pump, it could be that the switch isn't bringing in pump and the gauge.
I would check power for the pump as well as pulsing power to the sending unit at the connector there at the tank.
Gary's diagnosis makes more sense. If you are still drawing fuel from the front tank, and the gauge is not reading either, the common denominator is the dash selector switch unless you have two problems at once.
There isn't a 6 port fuel tank selector valve listed for the OP's 1986 F250 302. OP's "About Me" profile says 1986 F250, but failed to mention this fact.

He did say in his 1st post though, that it was EFI. If it is EFI, it will have a 6 port valve somewhere, the EFI has return lines.
