I just bought a 2003 Ford Expedition. There are several issues that I need to address on it and am using this site a lot to help troubleshoot so thought I should register, especially once I found out how to get the door keycode without an expensive trip to the dealer!
What I'm struggling with is keyless entry/remote issues. The rig came with two remotes but the owner said they hadn't worked in some time. I replaced the batteries and went through the programming rigamarole (cycle ignition eight times, etc.) and was able to get into the programming mode (apparent by the lock/unlock of the doors), but when I push any button on either remote, nothing happens. Both remotes appear in good shape, but it definitely is possible both are bad. But is there anything else (fuses, etc.) I should be checking before I spend money on another remote just to find it still doesn't work and it's something bigger? I did disconnect the Expedition battery for about 20+ minutes and reconnected it, the radio blanked out so it was definitely out of juice, but again, when I went through the programming mode, I get nothing when I push any button on either remote.
I know I am new, but I have searched high and low and just when I think I found a thread, it doesn't address anything further than getting into the programming mode in the Expy. I'm sure I missed something, so if needed, just point me into the direction of a thread, I don't want to clutter the board with repetitious posts.
As a side note, the auto lock/unlock works on both driver and passenger door and I can unlock the door via the keypad (thanks to another post where I found the code). I downloaded and checked the manual but can't see what fuse I should check out, checked several and everything appears fine...

I think once you get the computer in new code recognition mode it should work.
Are you sure the batteries are good?
If you're not in a hurry you can get 2 new remotes for $7.32 on ebay.

I got a couple a few years ago and have 4 entered, they have worked fine.
One tip, once the computer is in new code recognition mode you have to enter all the remotes at that time.
You can't add just one more later.

All the keypad codes can be found in the 2003 Owners Manual starting on page 149.
Thank you for the reply. Yes I can get into new code recognition mode, but neither remote can be recognized (I press any button and nothing happens). They have fresh batteries. I did order a couple of new remotes for around $10 on Amazon. Cheapest solution to see if it's my remotes or something else. I was just wondering what else I should be checking. I guess once I get the new remotes I'll be able to rule them out if it's something else...
I downloaded an owner's manual. All it said on the 2003 was that I could get the keypad code from the card that came with it (which I didn't have), or to go into the dealer. Ended up finding a post that says it's on a label inside the passenger side floor board; just had to move some wiring and unbolt a relay box to see it, but it was nice to save the money the dealer would have charged.

My error, you were talking about the original door lock open code.
Yes, it's on a sticker on the control box, up under the dash.
So i received my new remotes and still no luck, so the issue is with the Expedition. Does anyone have any input on what I should look into? Not sure where to look fuse wise (couldn't find which fuse operates this in the manual and not having any other issues anyway other than rear window not opening), or the relay(?) box that receives the remotes signals. Going to keep digging, maybe pick up a Chilton's to see if I can find something in there. Thanks in advance!
I have this same issue before, I can't program new key fobs because the door ajar switch is broken (all 3 of them but I guess any 1 could cause this) Does your interior light stay on when you lock the door (it will go off until the accessory delay turns it off) ?

Hmmm... I don't see a door ajar warning that stays on. When I'm in the Expedition and lock the doors the lights will go off after a 25(ish) second delay.
Not sure if it's the Keyless Entry Theft Module (p/n: 2L1T-15K602-AL)..? I'd hate to go down that rabbit trail as I'm getting beyond my abilities. Was hoping an expensive diagnostic fee from the dealer was avoidable but now not so sure.

First time I've looked at this circuit.
I think the Vehicle Security Module (VSM) Microprocessor controls this stuff.
The door lock relays are in this module.
Power is supplied to the VSM thru fuses 5, 6, 30 & 40.
You might try pulling all the fuses at the same time to check them, maybe the module will reboot.

Ah! I had no idea about this... I'll start going down this route, a quick search says it's behind the glove box. I'll start looking and let you know. Thank you!
Well crap. Fuses seemed good, they didn't look blown. I pulled 3, 5, 6, 30, & 40. Even tried disconnecting the battery again for about 20 minutes. I can get into the new code recognition (by confirmation of the lock/unlock cycling) but get nothing out of my (now) four remotes when I press any button on any remote within 20 seconds... Maybe bad VSM(BSM)? It's officially beyond me, guess if I want to have the luxury of the remotes I'll have to shell out some dough to get it diagnosed...
Last thing I'm wondering... does anyone think it can be linked to liftgate not being able to open? I thought they were two distinct issues but maybe they can be connected?? I was just about to start looking into how to fix the liftgate and thought it could be a correlation, then again, maybe not...

Liftgate glass that is... I press the button on the back for it but get nothing...
