The Chevy isn't that much stronger than your current truck. Any chip or tuner will give you an advantage. I would recommend that before you consider using a chip or tuner that you add an aftermarket air intake, an aftermarket turbo downpipe and 4" exhaust, and a pyro gauge. I would NEVER run a chip or tuner without the gauge or your temps could get dangerously high. The intake and exhaust system will help lower EGT's.

johnsdiesel is right- adding an intake, exhaust, and pyrometer before adding a chip would be the way to do it safely. Making power in a diesel creates heat, and controlling/monitoring the heat is essential.

Thumbs up chips

John and Quad both called it right. Go with the exhaust first and then the intake. Both are a must if your really serious about keeping the eng running right.

Do you need to change all of that even when you use the lowest setting on those chips. When it comes to the exhaust can a person run some type of dual exhaust out the back? I seen a powerstroke one time with it out yhe back with those big chrome tubes it looked good.

I just installed the Diablo 54/78 chip in my 2002 PSD and took a 600 mile trip in the 54 hp mode. (For now, I have the triple gauges, K & N and stock exhaust and downpipe.)
I was running with a Duramax for a considerable stretch around 90 mph through the AZ desert and could pass him anytime I needed too. (Except my limiter tops out at 95 mph!)
My EGT was around 800 degrees, tranny @ 180-190 degrees.
I wouldn't say that a new exhaust is a must unless you plan on pulling something or you have a lot of uphills in your area.
However, a new exhaust is my next purchase just to keep things as cool as possible.

To mildly disagree, go with the pyrometer FIRST. If you never add another thing to your truck, this simple gauge will help you to drive both safer (for your engine), and more efficiently. Then go with the aftermarket air intake or filter, and the larger exhaust with straight through muffler and then - and only then - think about the chip. The intake and exhaust will reduce the amount of horsepower that is used in pumping air, something that happens with every revolution of that engine. Done correctly they will result in more hp available to beat your buddy's Duramax, as well as lower (read safer) temperatures and better mileage. If you still need more power after that, then go with the chip.

I had all of the above, along with a boost gauge,an electric fan clutch, an Amsoil dual remote oil bypass filter and a Banks Brake installed at the same time. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

What is a electric fan clutch.is that the same as a electic fan?man when the fan kicks on that pulls the power down.
