I am new to this Forum and hope I am in the right spot.
Anyway, I am looking to buy an 85 F150 4x4 302 granny 4 spd. Its on Craigslist and the guy says it runs but needs new gaskets. From the pics hes sent the truck looks pretty good not much rust if any and looks like it has been treated like a truck (not beaten but also not babied).
Here is the post:
"!!Speed sale!! 1985 Ford F-150, 302 V8 granny 4speed 4x4, no radio, no tailgate, needs a couple gaskets on the motor. It will need a basic tune up that I will do soon. Clutch will last for a while but will need to be replaced in about a year, comes with tool box in the bed and two sets of wheels and tires will eventually need tires also.
The price is $800 firm the first 800 gets it, clean title in hand."
But seriously...a non-rusty 4x4 runner is probably worth $800 easy. I'd want to know exactly which 'couple of gaskets' are in question here though...I'm guessing they aren't the easy ones.
I paid that for my 81 F100 4x2 Flare Side with a 300 & granny 4sp.
I did not see much rust, little in the cab corners and floors not to bad from under side.
Inside of the truck was trashed, motor had a miss and BIG issues with the front end.
My plan was just do what it needed to get it safe and on the road.
Well I went way off the plan and turned into a frame off rebuild.
Replace both floors, rockers, cab corners, rear door posts and lower left door inside & out.
Bought a 81 F100 parts truck (roll over) less motor, doors, tail gate and some other little items for $400.
It does not cost anything to go look at it and if it is not what you want to get into for the $$ walk away. (easier said then done sometimes)

I have 2 pics so far.
I'm told that more pics are on the way I asked for some of the frame, more of the overall body, engine, and interior.
What questions should I be asking about these older trucks like this? What issues should I be looking out for?
Blue Ox was up for sale at half the price in South Carolina with a literally trashed engine and I am in Ohio ! Yes, my Daughter is in SC and did the dirty work but still....800 for a runner with minimal rust is more than decent up here near the Great Lakes. It's almost a given that the seat upholstery and interior trim will have to be dealt with. What area are you in ? Region plays a huge part in truck values.
By the way this truck is going to be used mainly as a light work truck/ play truck while I'm fixing it up. Hopefully I'll get to the point where I have the skill and money to fix her all the way back to her original beauty. But for now college first...
I'm in North Carolina. The big thing here I'm told is to watch for frame rust and rust of everything on the undercarriage from the salt we use in the road when it snows. I hear ya on the interior. I'm not expecting a kings throne but I hoping it wont be all the way trashed.

Anything in particular I should be on the lookout for as I go look at it? Anything commonly wrong or that stands out to some of you more experienced buyers?

That's what I thought...until I needed to drive it everyday, given unseen circumstances. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Always, always make it roadworthy first and foremost. Blue Ox runs a 40 mile commute, round trip, 4 days a week. Who would have thunk it ?
That's what I fear will happen. 90% laybor 10% parts right?😂
On a serious note is a head gasket job overly difficult or just time consuming. I have a shop and all the tools required just a call away but don't want to get in over my head. I guess my question is is a head gasket job difficult or just time consuming?
