When I shift to reverse ('78 F-150 Ranger XLT auto. 4x2), I can feel the rear-end jerk. It shakes the whole truck. Does this mean that my drive shaft is loose? Also, 1st and 2nd gear (low gears) don't work. Why is this?
loose driveshaft? more than likely not but you could check the u-joints, the jerk could be coming from the ring and pinion gear in the rear end, does it do it when put into drive?
then you say 1st and 2nd don't work? you might have a bad trans or it could need band adjustment
Occasionally, it will jerk to drive if coming from reverse, but not a lot, fortunately. I hope it's minor. The transmission could be bad. The truck sat for over five years when my grandfather's Parkinson's got the best of him (it was his since 1982).
simple way is jack up the back of the truck, both wheels off the ground and with the shifter in park turn the tire back and forth and then do the same with the driveshaft, watch how much play you have when turning.
make sure the front wheels are chocked and use jackstands
when you say no 1st or 2nd does it start out in drive then?
Oh, yes, drive works fine. It's only the separatelow gears, 1st and 2nd, that don't work. How do I know if I have too much play in park? It seems fine to me. It's may roll one or two more inches further than when I put my mom's '00 Intrepid in park. Thanks.
what i mean is it starts out in drive (3rd gear)? or does it start out in 1st and go through the gears? if so what do you mean by

1 or 2 inches of roll at the wheel is a bit to much? when it is jacked up and you are turning the driveshaft or the wheel back and forth you will know if there is to much. also put it in neutral and turn the driveshaft a couple of revolutions. listen or "feel" for any clunking whilst turning the shaft
