Hey guys, totally new to this forum and car rebuilding in general. I have always wanted to rebuild a classic and I think I finally have the chance. My father in law has a 1956 Ford, I believe it is an F100. He has an inline six in it that has been rebuilt. He wants to get a 3 speed with overdrive for it. I will move onto other parts of the truck later but just want to get it running first. Any tips you guys can give me on finding a 3 speed with overdrive that would fit the inline six?
Sorry, I can't help you with your transmission question. Someone will be along soon with some suggestions for you. Welcome to FTE and good luck with your project.
Getting your truck back to running and driving is an excellent first goal. Many new owners start taking their trucks apart with big plans for modifications. Unfortunately many of these projects never get reassembled. Their owners discover (too late in the process) that it is far easier to take a truck apart than it is to put it back together.
We always enjoy pictures. Please share some with us if you can.

Quicksilver, welcome to FTE the best Ford Truck Forum on the world wide Web! I am not an expert in that area but it might be hard to find a stock one. But I am sure there are after market overdrive's that will fit. Someone should be along shortly to answer your questions. One thing about FTE is that our regulars frequent this sight quite often so you won't have to wait for days for an answer.
And one more thing. We need pictures of your truck, please!
You'll need to find a TRUCK 3-sp w/OD, a Car trans won't be right. I can't swear to it but I think any from '53 thru maybe '60 will work. There's a lot more to it than the trans, you need a bunch of electrical stuff (relays, switches) and a new shorter driveshaft.
Worth posting there. Also I would recommend posting a want ad on Craigslist for one. Just searching doesn't yield nearly as many results as posting a wanted ad.
Best of luck, looking forward to pictures! '56 is my personal favorite year
And since you mentioned being new to rebuilding, TAKE PICTURES. Before you take anything apart, take pictures of how and where the bolts are. Label and bag all the bolts and parts, get OCD with it. You might remember what they are next weekend but not next month let alone year, or how exactly it went together. I've worked on my truck for years and still need to double check photos I took or wonder where a bolt went or to see if I was missing something in the first place.
Plus all the pictures helps remind you how far you've come and makes for a really cool album. Better to have them and delete them after you find you don't need them then to spend 4 hours on the internet trying to find out how it was supposed to fit.
Welcome to FTE. We need a little more info about your truck in order to help you. What transmission is in it currently? Automatic or manual? And as always pictures are an necessity.

i believe the last transmission in it was a 3 speed on the tree, but I don't think he has that transmission anymore. i won't be near the truck for a few weeks but when I get over there I will take some pictures. Thanks
