I have been in the slick forum for a while now but I just bought a 1948 f2 I think. It came with the 17 inch widow makers eight lug wheels it seems to be a great starting place. the flat head 6 has had water running though it for years it looks like. I plan to use this truck in my business upgrading the brakes the rear end and the engine. I love the 390 in my 65 but I have the running gear out of a 64 f100 with a dana 60 limited slip dif and a 292. any advice welcome
Hey Chris,
That looks pretty good for being dragged out of a field. Did you get a Title with it?
What drive train are you thinking about? Is your cab pretty solid...
that area around the windshield can be tough but the cab inside looks better
than our starting point.
Yes I won the creigslist lottery has a title vin matches.saw the ad when it was 3 hours old SCORE! it was 100 bucks eastern oregon truck not much rust everything looks solid. the Grill is the only major thing missing, well and the seat. I may do the 292 or a 390 but a 5 cyl. Mercedes diesel would be cool. Please feel free to give advice things to look out for. one question I have is can you swap 5 on 5 1\2 lug to the 8 lug spindels?
Hey Chris,
We have a '50 F1 that came with some very worn out Mustang bucket seats. We went with a salvage yard Chevy S10 bench seat ...Any of the smaller truck seats will work S10, Dakota, Tacoma, Ranger, etc.... The S10 seat was 48 inches wide or so & the cab runs 52 inches or so...left room for the seatbelt roll next to the seat.
Good luck over there. Sorry I can't help with your tire question. The tire experts will come through shortly I'm sure.
If you have 17" wheels are you sure it's not an F-3 rather than F-2? Check your serial number.
The front spindles are the same F-1/2/3. The half ton hubs will mount to an F-2 or F-3 front axle just fine. Rear not so, but you're probably swapping in a later 9" anyway. Stu
Yeah I'm not sure if it is an F2 F3 how do I tell by the serial number? I was thinking about putting a Dana 60 out of my 64 Parts truck in there it has the limited slip. Thanks for the info on the spindles that should help me out a lot and I just have to find some what years are compatible?
If you have the 1964 D60, that's a bolt in swap and let's you skip the swap to 5 x 5.5" half ton front hubs. Any F-2/F-250 sets of 16" wheels having the 8 x 6.5" pattern up to the 1997 HD model, and comparable E Series vans up to the present, will donate the wheels.
The truck's serial number will be on the firewall upper left corner, and frame on the passenger side rail near the motor mount diagonal. A 1948 F-2 will have 87HD and F-3 will have 87HY. In 1949/50 they will be 97HD or 97HY respectively. Stu
The d60 Is out of a half ton so I guess it is more precisely a d60.2 or some such. When you ordered a f100 with limited slip dif you got a dana for a few years. so it is 5 on 5.5. As for the number it is 87hy so it is an f3. Thanks for the info It is hard to do some searches when f1 f2 f3 are too common to be used.
Ford didn't split F2/3 until about fall of 1948 so all of the early ones are Y's. I'll have to look and see exactly where the split took place - I think it's around 110,000.
If you don't mind listing your serial number, I can tell you for sure.
If my memory serves me right, I think the only difference between the f2 and f3 was the use of the 1/2 ton (5x5.5) axles and the HD (8 lug) with 2 speed rear axle. The f2 could have either transmission and I think the f3 only came with the HD trans with the drum brake attached to trans.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Love to know myself.
Okay, here's some fixes. Both F-2 and F-3 have 8 x 6.5 pattern hubs. F-3 has two part 17" wheels, F-2 has 16" one piece. F-2 has 12" rear brakes, F-3 has 14" through mid 1951 then switched to 12" Bendix. F-2 has standard rear shocks, optional on F-3. Added standard leaves in F-3 spring packs, both sets optional on each model. Engine and transmission options the same both models. V8 239 or I6 226, 4 spur or 3HD floor shift. That's mostly it, I'll keep thinking on it. Stu
