I'll post my question first. I just picked up some baby swamp injectors. My truck also came with new up pipes, boots, 3 inch down pipe. (I'm guessing from Swamps) I'm in the process of having my friend install all of this. He sent me this picture this morning. Looks like my wheel is dusted. He is checkin the rest of the housing but a turbo may be needed. My question is should I go to a T4 mount. If I do, I see on Swamps site that the mount comes with up pipes. Since I already have them is it possible to buy the mount without up pipes? everywhere I look it seems to be sold with up pipes?
I'm not upgrading from baby swamp injectors. So from what I read a stock turbo capable of 36 PSI would be fine. I plan on towing 14K twice a year around 1400 miles round trip. I'd like to keep EGTs in check, and just have a decent driver. If stock is fine, and no T4 is needed then I'm looking at a BD - T38 Thruster turbo from swamps. Thoughts on that?
On a side note, I was looking to do some business with Swamps. I bought the truck, it came with their baby swamps boxed up for installation that PO bought off a friend. They were 3 years old. I thought Id send them in for flow testing. They said that they tested positive for gasoline running through them, and that some of the o rings were worn. Even though I wasn't the original buyer, and somebody in the past ran gas through them, they still fixed them for free. I've read some bad customer service on this forum, but I that impressed me, so I'd like to give them some business.
If you don't have a lot of blow by at 2k RPM, then motor might be fine but a compression test IMO should be done.
T4 mount is nice if you swap turbos often or want to make it easier the second time
look at Freakify mod for more info
I think towing 10k is ok being stock on my 95 and I just found my EBPV sticking and it has more power than ever so I would think 14k would be fine at stock. an intercooler will help with EGTs when towing if using a heavy tow tune.
I don't drive fast when towing and don't have the huge 7 mile grades some have but towing to New Hampshire Mountains went fine for me last year even with a faulty EBPV.
Thank knotty rope. I've asked for a compression to test to be done. Since the glow plugs and injectors will be out anyways it's wise to get that done. Not sure if I want to know haha. It runs like every other stock OBS that I've ever driven so I hope it's okay. Still waiting on him to get the Turbo off to see how the rest of it looks. He's working on it at his shop between jobs to keep my costs down!
It's confirmed that it needs a cold side wheel. I'm not too familiar with them. About to research a bit. Any brands better than others here? I see wicked wheels, wicked wheels 2 etc.
Also both up pipes were in bad shape too. I have replacements for those. It made around 12PSI on a hard pull previously. She should run pretty good now with new pipes, wheel, tunes and baby swamps
no one turbo will fit all needs, the intake wheel is half of it, the other wheel gets it spinning
it all depends on your mods and the air flow needed for it
when you get near 40 PSI you need head studs
S366 and S369 series I hear good things about on here but I am not an expert on turbo sizing. you can look at some of the peoples builds and see what they have done.
I wouldn't spend a penny fixing that stock turbo. With those injectors and 14000 out back you will just waste cash on stock turbos and get frustrated.
t-4 kits come with all new plumbing. You can not reuse the old up pipes as the whole mount is different. Your best bet is to sell the old ones.
With 160cc injectors a 366sxe would be sweet to tow with. You will need a good hpop, electric fuel pump/regulated return, head studs, intercooler ...yadda yadda yadda...trans...or clutch...this is a big cliff to fall off of...
I personally was overjoyed to take the stock turbo off and never consider letting it back on.
Thanks for the advice Fordman. I may live to regret these words, but cash is being dumped into my project classic car at the moment. I just need the truck working again. I've ordered a riff raff wheel based on reviews. I already had new up pipes, so I figured I'll just put those in and stick with the stock turbo. When I tow twice a year I'll put it in stock tune or 40hp tow mode to try and keep the turbo in good shape. I'm sure I'll posting soon about my blown e40D when I get the truck back with those injectors

Keep it cool. My completely stock original 342000mi e4od after 2.5 years is living still...its hanging in there @450...when we cranked up the tune...not so much lmao
You DONT need a T4 mount and all that for all the coin it takes. For your needs stock is more than fine. The Dually in my sig hit 30-31 psi with Stage 1 Rosewood injectors. I towed 11000 with that truck quite a bit and it pulled great. Save your money and fix the stocker.
Thats where I'm at. Looking forward to getting it back. Once I have it I plan on picking up a 2 car trailer and taking some test pulls to see how it will do. Then from there I can make a quick decision on what to do based on EGT's and Trans Temp.

There is a difference between 'need' and 'want' Bryon, LOL!!
In my case, with my stock turbo, I could not tow my 7000 lb 5er and keep egt's under control on the hills. I had power, but could not us it. Even with stage 1 Rosewood injectors, intercooler, custom tunes. Then I did the t-4 and s366 turbo, studs and springs, and e-fuel. I now pull a 10,000 lb 5er with all the power I need. Put it in a tow tune and go. If I overfuel it on a hard pull, the egt's will still go up, but there's no need to. I think the s366 just pumps so much more volume of air, it helps to keep it cooler
