I'm looking to get another truck this fall, and I've decided to go with the 460 over the 351. I'm thinking of getting a '95 or '96, but I've seen a few '94's with really low miles going for decent prices. So I'm wondering if there were any changes during the last few years of the 460? Also, what about automatic trannies? Did they have any big changes throughout those years?
I thing they may have upped he horsepower in 95-96, but I cant remember for sure. The tranny's are much better in the 95-up. The earier E4OD's had their share of problems.
The California emissions 96 and 97 460s were made with the desireable mass airflow injection systems and have no air pump or air injection. Also a nice single 3" low-restriction catalytic converter.
Definitely a better setup than the 49-state versions and much easier to make performance mods work right. The transmissions are better than the earlier models with some upgraded parts inside.
With some tough haggling, you should be able to get a pretty good deal on a later model than a '94, especially now with gas prices what they are. I don't know what your budget is but you should be able to find one for way less than $8,000. I paid only $7,700 for my cherry '96 with 130K highway miles on it over a year ago and it runs like a top, uses no oil at all. But you've got to be patient and shop around, there's a lot of real beaters out there, no one gets rid of a good-running Ford truck!

Hey I picked up a cherry 97 F-350 4x4 with a 460 last Nov. It only had 52K on it. I paid 14,000 but it was worth every penny. It's got an E-4od that works pretty good, but I would recomend the Banks tranny module for it. It will help out alot. BTW my truck has a build date of 11/97, so it was one of the last ones. I love it.
