Oil residue in coolant tank

Just wanting to get an idea of what would cause oil to be in my coolant tank. I replaced head bolts with arp studs awhile back an used oem head gaskets. I replaced oil cooler with aftermarket one from IPR.
Any ideas will b much appreciated

Commonly oil cooler or oil cooler seals. Small chance the front cover seals. Anything leaking to the outside of the engine anywhere?

I have a coolant leak that was on passager side but it quit an it now leaking on driver side. Driver side leak looks like it's coming out hose on bottom of coolant tank. I haven't seen any oil leaks.

Could it be residue from the previous work? I don't remember any complaints on the IPR oil coolers. Some of the eBay units have had problems and the Dorman issues are well known. The front cover is a long shot. Is the residue in the degass bottle for sure oil? Oil sorta goes through stages, floating on top of the coolant and leaving a ring around the inside of the bottle for a while, then getting mixed up better into a grey/brown milkshake. Combustion gasses (from headgasket issues) often don't make a milkshake just kinda floating gunk and often a much stronger smell. Can you post a picture of what you're seeing?

I can email you pictures but I don't know how to post pictures on here
I did ARP studs an new OEM head gaskets back when I put the IRP oil cooler in. Not saying it couldn't b that but I wouldn't think it would be an I hope it's not that.

The main issue I had heard on IPR oil coolers is that they did not cool quite as well. Have not heard of failures. Seems like an oil cooler would be the cheapest of the possible repairs required though (unless it is just oil contamination from previous maintenance).

It has done fine until a few weeks ago. It started running a lil rough when I first started it up in the morning. Once it warmed up it ran fine. Then I changed to oil bc it was a lil over due an then noticed the oil film in the coolant bottle. I'm sick of the oil cooler issues anyway. saving up for a bulletproof oil cooler delete block. That's the only part I need to get so I can use the air oil cooler I built for my truck.

Based on Rusty's description, what does your degas bottle coolant look like? If you can't see it very well, can you "dip out" a sample and check it? Floating carbon should "look and feel" different than oil (floating OR emulsified).

It was oil in my water. I don't know if IPR oil cooler ruptured or how it got in there. I started pulling it apart an I had a orangeish colored gunk in all my hoses an it had stopped up my radiator. I got it flushed out as best as I could b4 putting new ford oil cooler in it. I got to do a few more good flushes with fleetguard restore coolant system cleaner.
First drive with coolant cleaner in it oil temp was only 5 to 7 degrees above the coolant temps. I only drove it about 10 miles to the store to put fuel in it. Water temp got up to 190 oil temp highest was 197.

Once I get enough money saved up I'm getting that bulletproof diesel oil cooler delete block so I can start using the air oil cooler I have put together for my truck.

Definitely a failed oil cooler. When mine failed it was because one the gasket for the cooler cover failed. The oil cooler was also pretty plugged. Stay far away from IPR....Their quality has been questionable the past couple of years..

I got that IPR oil cooler bout 6 or 7 years ago. It has worked good except for towing until now. An I'm not sure if it was the IPR oil cooler that failed or a gasket on the oil cooler cover. I'm thinking it was a gasket because I found a gasket that was brittle when I removed it. I put a OEM oil cooler back in it for now but once I get the bulletproof oil cooler delete it will b put in place of the OEM oil cooler so I will NEVER have to worry bout this happening again.

I agree man. That's my plan too, I wish they would have had a factory re-route that went somewhere besides the valley of the engine.....Not only is it one of the hottest places on an engine, but it's just such a pain to get to! The BPD relocation is OK, but I hate all those hydraulic style hoses, so I plan on getting the air oil cooler like you. Didn't you say you built yours??
