I have a 2004 F250 4WD with an 8" lift. It currently has Pro Comp ES9000 shocks that need to be replaced. Here's the dilemma:
Sitting level the eye to eye distances are FRONT 26" and REAR 31". The current PRO COMP shocks on the front have 18.8 collapsed length, 32.9 extended length and a total travel of 15.52. The rear shocks are 20.36 collapsed, 35.9 extended and travel of 14.01.
I'd like to replace them with Bilstein 5100 front and 5125 series rear shocks. There are two options, one of them collapsed is 18 and the extended is 29.7. The other collapsed is 20.75 and the extended is 35.
The question is specific to the front, it seems that the shorter of the two may risk topping out because they would only have 4 inches of travel from where they rest at. Would it be better to just use the larger shock front and rear. Even with the longer shock the from would still have 5.25 inches of compression.
Unless you're rock crawling or running Baja, the travel may only be 4" or less of compression anyways. Use a ramp or jack and flex it out by lifting the right front wheel up until it stops compressing the spring. Take measurements of both sides, right side compression and the left side droop. Then pick the shock that fits your measurements.
