Question Kingpin reassembly

I'm getting ready to reaasembly the axle on the drivers side, while looking at the kingpin set there are 2, one for each side, small thin rubber seals. The maunal says they go on the bottom side of the upper bushing. I tryed to get it to go in the I.D. but because it's so thin it got bent out of shape. Do I really need these? I suppose they are mainly to keep the grease in.

Anyone know?

Kingpin reassembly

Unless you want to redo your kingpins in a couple of years, I'd put the seals in. A thin coating of grease on the seals will help get them in place without destroying them.

Kingpin reassembly

I just did that job, and found that it wasn't supposed to go into the ID of the spindle. It just sits in this space between the spindle and I-beam. It seemed pretty hoaky. I would have expected a counter bore to allow that seal in there, but there wasn't.

I put it in on one side, but couldn't get it together with it on the other side. Later when I greased the bushings, grease squirted out between the upper part of the spindle and the I-beam similarly on both sides.
