My 65 according to the VIN originally had 352 but some where along its path it was switched to a 300.
Just bought a 1973 F100 with a 390 to put a V8 back in my 65 but also to use the disc brakes and power steering.
Wondering if there other parts I would look at repurposing. The 73 also has dual fuel tanks, not sure if one of those would work on the 65 or not.
The 73 does have an automatic, but would like to get a 4 speed as that is what is in my 65 now, but guessing it will not be compatible with the 390 so I need to figure out what is the right transmission. Or I guess I could switch to the automatic and would probably need the steering column, etc.
My 65 uses the entire front end of a 73 f100 including all front suspension, steering column & pwr steering unit, front disc brakes, and AC. Pretty much everything can be swapped in.
Depending on what transmission is in your '65 now, you might be able to reuse it. Obviously you will need a bell housing, clutch, flywheel, etc to fit the 390. Both of the 1965 OE 4 speeds had a granny as a first gear, meaning what you really have is a 3 speed with an additional occasionally useful deep first gear. But you probably know that. Our emeritus contributor from North Carolina, JWilker, is the expert on what you can change over. He would encourage you to keep your donor truck until you have absolutely harvested everything of value or need, then recoup some of your money by selling off the remainder. He would also encourage you to keep the automatic. The power steering mod will at the least require steering column modification. Having the automatic one to swap in is useful if you don't mind mixing styles. Hope you enjoy your truck. Good luck!
I just did the same to my '66F250 only had a '77 F250. I used the motor(351M) front disc brakes, transmission, power steering, rear end, power brakes, etc. I cut down the steering column as I put the tall automatic shift kit in to look like the old 4 speed.
Truck rides great!
Thanks all for the feedback, had most of the same plans. I plan on driving the 73 over the summer as a fun beater truck and then this winter take it all a part. It would be great if I could reuse the transmission out the 65, I should find the part number on it, but I was told it was out of a mustang so it doesn't have the granny first gear.
Agree some parts I will take off and just store like the rear end etc. Was also thinking maybe cut the last 2ft off the bed put the bench seat in it and make a couch for the shop :-)
Pmason:
I would agree with all of the information above, especially with what SuperSabre stated. At the encouragement of Mr. Wilker, I did the same with a '74 truck, components donated to my '66. You really never know what you might need with the brake swap so I kept everything, such as the little brackets that hold the flex lines to the front calipers. The '65 brackets won't work with the flex lines. I even ended up swapping the foot operated e-brake and for the older hand-pull style. In my case space is limited, but it was definitely worth keeping all the little chassis parts in boxes until everything was fitted. You'll need the FE frame mounts for the 390 and I believe that I have a spare set, so let me know if you're looking for anything. The guys on this forum have a wealth of experience and advice to help you with exactly what you're doing. Good luck!
