I'm re-doing my inner fender wells for a better fit around the Torino IFS.
I noticed a molding like putty stuff, that was inbetween some of the body parts. What is it, and should I replace it when it goes back together?
Former SDSU lad here... Anyway, I noticed same on my '59 while cutting out the inner fenders post-Dakota IFS. Mine didn't look like Bondo or any type of body filler. It looked like VERY old and worn fender seals. So old, they'd almost turned to a gooey petroleum looking mush! Sound familiar? If so, I'd venture to say they are fender seals, and YES, I would recommend replacing them unless you actually LIKE the nostalgia of the infamous Ford Ratttle ?!?
Knucklebuster,
I would agree with Daryl. I bought some at a swap meet awhile back. It came on a roll with a waxed release paper between the layers of tape. The guy called it "whacky tape" and said it was for cushioning and moisture proofing between body panels. Might try the local paint & body supply store.
After I gave up and used a bitumastic roof tar, I found the right stuff. They sell it at paint shops and I've also seen for sale at swap meets. It is to be used in between metal parts to stop the squeeks. Good luck, John
