Hello All,
Today was the first tow run for my new to me 2006 F-250, Crew cab, 4x4, short box , 6.8, 6 speed truck with 4:10 rears.
Our trailer weighs in around 5,200lbs with dirt bikes, gear and a full 55gal drum of wash water.
The track is about 115 miles one way about 60% highway and then 4 lane stop and go the rest of the way (US route 15 through Gettysburg, PA).
About 1.5 hrs into the trip both there and home the check gauges warning note and chime came on. Temp gauge was in the red. No check engine light and no power loss.
The first time it happened I took it out of gear and started to coast to the shoulder and instantly the gauge dropped back to about 1/3 from cold.
Another mile or 2 and pegged again and drop to normal.
Coolant to the full line and no sign of leakage.
Same thing on the way home after 1.5 hours of drive time.
But never a loss of power or C.E.L. any and all ideas appreciated.
My guesses in order of probability: Cap not holding pressure and boiling. Thermostat issue, not fully opening. Bad fan clutch. Too much coolant/not enough water in the mix.
When I was able to pull into a lot at the first occurrence, there was no sign of boil over at the cap.
Leaving for vacation tomorrow. When I get back I plan on coolant and thermostat change.
The weird thing is the abruptness of the jump up as well as the drop back to normal.
I'm thinking of maybe getting a new temp sending unit also and installing it when the coolant is drained out.
Coolant mix ratio cannot cause this issue. The abruptness of the onset (and clearing) of the symptom likely rules out the rest of the suggested possibilities. Could be an air bubble in the cooling system caused by other issues that's causing an intermittent spike in the temperature at the CHT location.
Look for an intermittent CHT sensor/circuit first. Connecting a scan device and monitoring the CHT PID is suggested to see whet the sensor is reporting. You can also put the cluster into test mode and monitor the ECT temp as reported via the PCM (from the CHT sensor). That will gather additional information that might be instructive.
Thanks a lot Krewat,
I'll get things ordered and tackle it when I get back from vacation.
I think I'll get a temp sending unit right away also.
The weird thing is that it never set the MIL or cut back in power.
Customer's have been keeping me very busy the past few weeks. So I haven't had a chance to check in with a Ford dealer yet.
But I have kept my infrared thermometer in the truck.
Symptom finally came back today.
Again no check engine or power loss.
As soon as warning chime went off I pulled over at a safe spot and left the engine running. The highest temp was right at the thermostat. With the gun almost against the housing it read 190 degrees. All four corners of the intake ranged from 185 to 188.
Thinking I'll try to find the time this week to get a sending unit and have that oasis report run.
