that smoke is blow by from the crank case, i could be a bad PCV valve worn out rings, did he tell you what the codes were? i cant find those codes i find a (14) and theres 2 code (41) depending on which mode the eec was in when it gave it. but you can buy a complete engine with warrenty from www.jasperengines.com for $1100.00 DW
yo,
Do you have an increase in oil consumption?
If not then try for a new PCV valve.
Did the mech ck for compression or do a leak-down test?
If so, get the numbers and post em here (look at tech articles here for an example of the % differences)
If the engine drives great like you say, and you have a little blow-by, that is not cause for an immediate rebuild. It sounds to me like you can continue to drive it while you save for a rebuild.
The engine is using very little oil with absolutely no leaks. Compression is good it will flat get up and haul on the on ramp.
Pinging gone after I adjust the Timing but you have to remove the computer sensor before you adjust timing or it will freak out.
I intend to get that 7/70K engine posted by one of the guys that is unbelievable can 't find that anywhere in Tulsa, OK.
I figure its well worth the shipping.
I entend to go easy on the engine until it is absolutely necessary to replace. I have a new PVC Valve and still getting code could be a cheep part intend on going to Napa to replace.
*THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO ANSWERED, IF NOTHING ELSE I GOT A GREAT TRUCK AND JUST HAVING THIS FORUM HAS SAVED ME MASSIVE $$$$$., THANKS!"
No problem. If you use very little oil, then that means that your blow-by is not bad. My 1990 with 113K uses about 1 quart every 2,000 miles if that helps you figure anything out.
A little blow by is nothing to worry about and I REALLY find it hard to believe your engine is worn out. Yes it may be a little worn but truthfully it's nowhere near worn out.
I'm no expert on codes so I'm not going to comment on them but I can tell you this much old engines don't throw codes.
My 93 351 has a little over 201,000 miles on it and I can tell you once I get my injectors replaced she'll run as good as she did when she had 87,000 miles as she did when I bought her 4 years ago.
Oh and a word of advise people, dont procrastinate on getting your fuel pressure regulator replaced, because I didn't on mine it ended up killing one or more of my injectors.
Well, I just finished pulling a 200kplus miled 5.8 out of my 88 and
finally, after too much hassle went with an FRPP 5.8 shortblock and edelbrock
performer aluminum cylinder heads.
The reason my engine went out was because of two cylinders that were just above 50 psi. The tried and proven method is the compression and/or leakdown testing.
the wear induced wobble was noticable and the 3 or 4 crossfiring (arcing)
borg warner wires didn't help....I went ahead and purchased the remaining unrenewed sensors and installed them for peace of mind. The blowby was so bad the air cleaner box would drip oil onto the framerail due to the crankcase filter supersaturating.
the shortblock ran me $1100 (if i am going to have a new engine it may as well give me the power I WANT) which is why I went with aftermarket heads.
for the money I payed, the 209k or so miles I got out of it is a good deal.
Now I can't wait to test the new powerplant!!!! And smoke that F250 powerstroke that handed me my rear at a stoplight 6 months prior.
My engine is using about a half quart every two weeks, with no compression test yet or compression and/or leakdown test.
Air filter is not getting any leaking oil at all. None.
My gas mileage is about 11-12, much better than the 8mi/gal i was getting before i replaced:
cap, rotor, wires, plugs, o2 sensor, timing adj, flush radiator, teflon engine treatment, diffential drain are refill both front and bk, inspections on all hoses.
there is an annoying bump in the idle at stop lights. the choke is running up and down a little unimpressively on cold start ups.
I have recently replaced the O2 sensor, but with the code coming up obviously i bought crap.
I'm kinda inline with frogger01 that its hard to believe that 136,000 mi wore out. However, my mechanic is pretty honest, has worked free a few times for me on emergencies.
who do you trust? Im interested in capone injector replacement and is that necessary beyond a good cleaning? can i test this?
you said you replaced the O2 sensor, but just because wires look good on the outside, dosent mean the are good. all the sensors and ecm's on these cars are extreamly voltage sensitive, Like the o2 wires beinging down by the exhaust catch a lot of heat and the can start to break down, the resistance goes up you loose voltage, and you cant look at it and see it. so when doing these checks dont always assume its the component thats bad.
