Just wanted to put out a follow up; I know a lot of posts never reach a solution and people are left wondering what happened.

The pin at the distributor gear shattered and in turn busted the timing chain. I had wanted to replace the motor at some time anyway because it was from a 1975 2wd, so I elected to have a Jasper with an RV cam put in. Been very satisfied with it.

Thanks for the followup. Too many people don't, and we don't have a chance to learn that way.

And, glad you are happy with it.

Yes thank you for the follow up.

I got to ask a silly question? How did the old 460 know it was a 1975 and from a 2wd?
To me a motor is a motor and does not know what year it is or from what it cam out of.
Yes a cam profile maybe a little different or carb jetted different but should run good just the same.

Had the 2wd front dipstick in addition to the rear 4wd dipstick. Came 4wd from factory. Valve covers on the motor stamped with date of manufacture as 1975. Think the kids I bought truck from were trying to help their dad with the swap.

There are some differences with the engine blocks to be aware of when building/mixing engine parts on a 460:

The early blocks had shorter deck heights (either 10.300" or 10.310"), the D9 block had a taller deck height (10.322").

All pre-79 engines are internally balanced - all 79 up are externally balanced.

The D9 block (all engines 1979 up) have longer cylinder walls (extend .200" deeper into block) so an early internally balanced crank will not fit in a D9 block.
