I wasn't on top of it, just saw it at a trade show today. I think I'm one of the few that like the stop start, but glad you can disable it too, at least I could on my rental the other day.
Start/stop had been around for years in hybrids, the starter should hold up. Just be thankful Ford gives the option to disable it with a button or a trailer plug. A few companies that have this in non hybrid cars (Mazda) and cannot be disabled. Should not be anymore excessive wear on the engines, unlike carburetor engines.
I don't like the idea of the auto start/stop either, but to be fair and to keep an open mind, I've never experienced a vehicle with it installed.
I can't imagine it would be good for the engine to start and stop that often in bumper-to-bumper traffic. I'll take it on faith that the engines can handle it, though.
My wife's Lincoln has the stop/start feature. I can tell when it activates, but it's not intrusive. When you remove your foot from the brake pedal, it starts. By the time your foot reaches the gas, it's running and accelerates like normal. We've sat at a couple of lights in the Texas summer...if the A/C needs to cycle to maintain your preset temp, it will also start the motor to keep you comfy. Her's can be disabled, but she's never disabled it. She likes it.
I can't speak to longevity in relation to any of the components because it's still too new. We've probably had it 8 or 9 months and she might have 5000 miles on it.
My wife's Porsche Macan has the auto stop / start. Hers stays disabled, once you disable hers, it stays off until you enable it again, even after turning off the ignition. I don't think she's ever had it enabled......
