New Bumpside Owner

Hey fellas!

Just picked up my first bumpside today! 1970 F100, Long Wheelbase. Truck is in pretty good shape overall, with a recent respray and no real rust issues so far. I've been going through the truck and coming up with a plan for what I'm going to tackle.

I need a truck to haul around pieces of my various other projects. I think I'm going to make the interior as nice as I can, do as much rust abatement as possible and clean up the exterior.

Only actual rust through is at the front section of the cab. I imagine that's the first place to go. I looked underneath and the floorpans and bed rails look SOLID (all caps).

Exterior color on the plate says 2P, with that being New Lime and Boxwood Green. Is that the colors of the truck or has it been changed at some point?

There are some trim pieces that look like they want to wiggle loose. The clips are these, diamond shaped pieces with a spring on them. Are these easy to replace? How does the trim actually get seated in them? Is it a clip on or a slide on situation?

As a newb, I've got a bunch of other questions that I'll put in separate posts, but I'm excited and appreciate all the help and knowledge that you guys have.

Thanks!

E

It looks like you picked a winner. Are the engine and trans in pretty good shape? How does it drive?

It drives pretty well! As soon as we completed the transaction it started to rain HARD. I hopped in the truck, pulled on to I20 and drove it 30 miles or so back to Atlanta. No issues. Power brakes are in my immediate future.

It received a new clutch early this year but the trans and diff are a bit wetter than I'd like. I'm going to do a steam clean of the engine, trans and diff so I can get a better look at what I'm dealing with. Worst case, new seals.

Welcome to the Bumpside forum and that's a very nice looking truck you have.

A power brake booster will make it easier to apply the brakes but it won't improve the performance you get from the brakes. None of the '67-'72 F100s came with factory front discs. However, it's easy enough to install the front discs/suspension from a '73-'79 F100 or from a '75-'79 F150. This, along with the power brake booster, will make a dramatic improvement in how the truck slows/stops.

Nice looking truck. Most of the trim pieces are bolted through the body with a nut on the back. Once pulled you re position the clips back in the trim then bolt back into place. They kind of tilt at an angle into the trim.

Thumbs up New owner

Nice find. It looks like it was well cared for and still has the original hubcaps. Also looks like it has dual exhaust. After cleaning the driveline it may only need a pinion seal and a rear transmission seal. As said before the disc brake conversion is worth the effort. Add a front sway bar as these things wallow around like boat full of water.

Thanks for all the kind words, I'm pretty excited about it!

@orich - $4k, greater Atlanta area. I think classics are a little cheaper because OUR FREEWAYS KEEP FALLING DOWN.

While I'm sure the disc brake conversion is the way to go, I'm not ready to go down that road quite yet. Does anyone have a source for a bolt on booster for the current drum setup?

Tightening up the front with a sway bar sounds like the way to go. Any recommendations for a good kit? Can I do this with the stock setup or do I need the '73+ front clip to make it happen?

Also, can anyone comment on the color code on the plate vs. what's on the truck?

Thanks!

@Bill,

Thanks for the decode. I saw the decoder stuff but I was wondering about the New Lime and Boxwood Green. Are those the colors that are on the truck now?

Thanks!
